Taxonomy

Phylum: Mollusca

Class: Gastropoda

Order: Nudibranchia

Family: Glaucidae

Genus: Glaucus

Species: Glaucus Atlanticus

Derived Characteristics

From Gastropoda; soft-bodied, hermaphroditic, no segmentation

More specifically from Nudibranchs; no shell, vivid colors, feather-like gills, carnivorous

Habitat: G. Atlanticus can be found worldwide, in temperate and tropical oceans. It floats upon the water`s surface via an air bubble in its belly! (see anatomy pic in extra info) Most commonly found in the places marked on the map. . .

Feeding: This creature prefers to feed on many venomous organisms that are larger in size. It`s favourite: The Portugese Man o` War! It`s other main dishes include Velella Velella, Poprita Porpita, and the Violet Snail (Janthina Janthina)

MAP

The larger blue organisms are Glaucus Atlanticus,

The smaller blue ones being Glaucus Marginatus

Wonder how the G. Atlanticus is able to consume all that venom? It is totally immune. This creature instead eats the venomous nematocysts whole, collects them in cnidosacs at the tip of those feather-like `fingers`, and concentrates the venom for its own use as defense!

( This is all the info I could find online concerning it`s digestion)

Reproduction

Reproduction

Like most of it`s kind, G. Atlanticus is hermaphroditic. However, they cannot reproduce individually; after finding a mate, both animals produce egg strings.. These egg strings then either float freely on water, or stick to a nearby surface! (Be it another animal or a piece of driftwood)

Open circulatory system! (assumed due to it being in the Gastropod class)

The bright blue color this creature is famous for is actually it`s underside! The G. Atlanticus floats upside down in order to expose the bright colors and camouflage with the waves... It`s back is a silver-grey to hide from the underwater predators!

Extra info

Most sea slugs & snails have a `foot`on their underside. This sea-slug has a foot as their dorsal! (upper side)
