The first time we can see the genre of k-pop rearing its head is in the 1950s. The Kim Sisters were a pop music trio who spoke no English but achieved fame in the U.S. by performing soulful renditions of American pop songs with great diction.
The Kim Sisters’ musical career began in Korea during the Korean War in the 1950s. Musical performance spelled survival for the Kim sisters in the 1950s, as it had for their parents under Japanese colonial rule in the 1930s and '40s. During the Korean War, a military entertainment circuit linking US military “camp towns” sprang up in the war-torn country, and local performers could eke out a meager living performing for American soldiers. Throughout the 1960s, the Kim Sisters were the “face of Korea” and seen as adopted family members to American audiences. They worked tirelessly as traveling performers and minor TV personalities on variety shows like "Hollywood Palace," "The Dinah Shore Chevy Show" and military-themed shows like "Ensign O’Toole."
Political activism is an important topic in K-pop. A lot of this focus on activism can be attributed to folk-rock singer and composer Kim Min-ki. In 1970, he wrote the brief but sorrowful song Morning Dew. The song would go on to be the anthem of the youth pro-democracy movement during a time of political strife. Kim Min-ki often used his music as activism and eventually, his albums were banned because of it.

In the 1990s a group called Seo Taiji and Boys rose to fame and were the first band that started to resemble the K-pop music and mega fandom we have today. the 90's were also the start of a new era which we call 1st generation kpop.
The song come back home is a very popular song by Seo Taiji and Boys that was later given a remix of sorts featuring BTS. The song left a big mark on the kpop industry in terms of sound and style.

The first generation of K-pop is defined by new genres of music, focus on beautiful visuals, intricate choreography, and the appearances of the idols theselves. This time also introduces the term idol. H.O.T is considered to be the first true K-pop idol group because the group was highly manufactured and made up of trained pop stars. They released the song Candy in 1997 and it would become a bubblegum pop hit in Korea.
