How did WWI impact women roles in Canada

women's roles before WW1

women's roles before WWI

Women were usually  the homemakers before  World War I. Women were rated more on their appearance than on their abilities. Their role and rank were focused on keeping the family and children's responsibilities in order. Cleaning and caring for the house, caring for the young, cooking for the family, maintaining a garden, and sewing clothing for all.

Turning Point

Most women were banned from voting or fighting in the military during the First World War. Many regarded the conflict as an opportunity to obtain more rights and independence while also serving their countries. Women filled manufacturing and agricultural jobs at home while millions of men were away at war. Others served on the front lines as nurses, doctors, ambulance drivers, military operators, translators, and, in rare circumstances, soldiers.

Women’s Reactions to World War I

Women, like men, had mixed feelings about the war, with some supporting the cause and others being concerned. Some organizations, such as the National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies (NUWSS) and the Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU), simply suspended political activity throughout the war. The WSPU staged its single protest in 1915, demanding that women be allowed the "right to serve."

Impact

working in typically "men jobs"' gave women a much needed sense of independence which opened their eyes to the unjust situation they were in. this caused them to fight for their rights,

the biggest one being their right to vote. By the time World War l

started in 1914, women in 8 states, all west of the Mississippi

except Illinois, had already won the right to vote. .. The

referendum did not pass, and women waited another four years

before the 19th Amendment guaranteed their right to vote. A variety of laws have been passed to help them improve their situation. Within marriage and divorce, women had more rights

to property and children. They were also receiving more education. All of these laws set the ground for more reforms to benefit women's position in society which is why women today have the same jobs as men and so much more.
