Hyponichium - This allows the nail plate to detatch from the nail bed

Slighly thickened layer of skin that lies between the fingertip and free edge of the natural nail plate

Nail Bed - Supplys nourishment to the entire nail unit.

Portion of the living skin that supports the nail plate as it grows towards the free edge

Free Edge - it ensures the nail bed is covered and therefore protected.

The part of the nail that extends over the tip of the finger or toe

Nail Plate - Protects from trauma

Hardened keratin plate that sits on and covers the natural nail bed. Its the most visable and functional part of the natural nail unit

Lunula - Bridges the gap between living cells of the matrix and dead cells of the nail plate

Visable part of the matrix that extends from underneath the living skin, It is whitish, half moon shaped at the base of the nail.

Cuticle - Provides protection for the tissue that grows new cells.

Dead, colourless tissue attached to the nail plate.

Matrix - to make new fingernails or toenails.

Area where the nail plate cells are formed, this area is composed of matrix cells that produce the nail plate
