Water Pollution
Water Pollution
Water pollution is defined as the presence in groundwater of toxic chemicals and biological agents that exceed what is naturally found in the water and may pose a threat to human health and/or the environment.
What can the community do?
Solutions
The community can come together to protest about water pollution (1), they can volunteer to have a beach clean up often to keep beaches cleaned as much as possible (2). The community can spread awareness of the issue at hand (3). A fundraiser can be made to raise funds to put more trash cans on beaches and near other bodies of water like lakes and streams (4).
Those Against It
Against It
Not everyone in the community will be very supportive of the ways we can stop and/or prevent water pollution. People may oppose to the solutions mentioned because they can be time consuming and people have their own busy lives to worry about.
Why must the community do something?
Why?
If something is not done about water pollution, our drinking water and washing water can be contaminated with chemicals and other substances that are dangerous and possibly life-threatening to human beings. Not only are human beings in danger but water life species are also in danger.
Positive Externalities
Positive Externalities
- Government: having clean water will lead to a higher demand on crops, prices will allow citizens to buy more crops then giving the government more money.
- Household: in order to maintain clean bodies of water, everyone must recycle which will not only help keep water clean but also the environment.
- Business: the push for clean water can also encourage the push for clean work areas for businesses and their employees. Clean and safe work environment = happy and healthy workers.
- Rest of the World: cleaner water can keep diseases and illnesses at lower rates and keep many people healthy.
Negative Externalities
Negative Externalities
- Government: if the government leaves the issue of water pollution unsolved, the citizens will become angry and develop a hate for the government for not protecting them.
- Household:i if people do not recycle properly then water pollution can take a turn for the worse and our drinking and washing water will become contaminated so bad that we would have to boil water before using.
- Business: if workers get sick due to drinking or using contaminated water, businesses will be left short handed or even out of business.
- Rest of the World: contaminated waters are producing illnesses and killing people. In many areas, water is already limited so we must stop water pollution to save lives and stop further limited water sources.
