Supernatural Aid

2. Supernatural Aid

Later in the story after Beowulf had killed Grendel and his mother, Beowulf had been fighting the dragon and came across his helper who was the one comrade to stay with him. "Only one of them remained, stood there, miserable, remembering as a good man must, what kinship should mean" (711-713). His name was Wiglaf who was the son of Wexstan and he was a good soldier.

Crossing the First Threshold

3. Crossing the First Threshold

Beowulf would finish their voyage after picking his best warriors to fight Grendel in Denmark. A Danish watcher shook his heavy spear in their face when they came ashore and said "Whose soldiers are you, you wou've been carried in your deep-keeled ship across the sea road to this country fo mine" (152-154).

Belly of The Whale

Beowulf's sword couldnt cut through Grendel's Felsh. Beowulf is forced to fight with his hands. No weopon could finish the fight he started. Bewould is still able to take him down: "Hell's captive caught in the arms of him who of all the men on earth was the strongest" (364-366).

Belly Of The Whale

1. Call To Adventure

Beowulf's adventure started when he had heard about how Grendel filled nights with horror and quickitly commanded a boat to sail out. Beowulf would see this as heroic, "Proclaiming that he'd go to that famous king. Now when the help was need" (115-116). Nothing made Beowulf regret going.

The Road of Trials

The Road Of Trials

Beowulf went through three trials. The first being the fight with grendel which he succseeded in. The second would be the fight with Grendel's mother. The last one would've been the fight with the dragon where Beowulf was wounded by the claw of the dragon and is killed: "dying miserably and alone, butchered by thw savage beast" (770-771).

Atonement with the Father

Atonement with father

Grendel's Mother is powerful with revenge. She now has the power against Beowulf when the fight begins. Beowulf struggles and is finally met with a fair fight. Grendel's mom must be killed so that Beowulf could come into a new being as the King. Beowulf has succseeded in killing Grendel's mom: "Her body fell to the floor, lifeless, the sword was wet with her blood, and Beowulf rejoiced at the sight" (541-542).

Apothesis

Beowulf big rest is when he returns home from the fight with Grendel's mom along with the other Geats where he is now the King. Beowulf rules Geatland for fifty years (italics). After he would be ready to fight the dragon

Apothesis

The Ultimate Boon

The main goal of Beowulf's Jounrey was to take down Grendel. Beowulf won the battle and kept Grendel's claw and head as a trophy. "He sought Hrothgar to salute him and show Grendel's head" (617-619).

The ultimate Boon

Return

The Crossing of the Return Threshold

The Crossing of the Return Theshold

The first Threshold was just arriving at Denmark to fight Grendel. 50 years later he uttered his final boast when fighting the dragon: "I've never known fear, as a youth I fought in endless battles. I am old now, but I will fight again, seek fame, still, if the dragon hiding in his tower dares to face me" (625-629).

Freedom to Live

Beowulf gave his men and kingdom the freedom to not fear of the death, but the freedom to live. He killed the dragon but died a hero. His men mourned their beloved leader and cried as no better king had lived. They mourned: "No prince so mild, no man so open to his people, so deserving of praise" (868-869).

Refusal of the Return

Despite being King of the Geats for 50 years back at home, he can never go to a normal life. Beowulf, now an old man, determines to slay the beast (Italics). The beast is the dragon who menaces his Kingdom.

Master of Two Worlds

Master of two worlds

Beowulf is somehwat paralled to Jesus spiritually. Jesus faced Hell's captive, sacrificed himself, and became king because of his recognization. Beowulf referred to God when fighting Grendel's Mother: "Holy God, who sent him victory, gave judgement for truth and right. Ruler of the Heavens" (526-528).
