CONDITIONAL SENTENCES

TYPE I

ENGLISH 6 - UNIT 11. OUR GREENER WORLD

LESSON 3. A CLOSER LOOK 2 (GRAMMAR)

WHAT ARE CONDITIONAL SENTENCES TYPE I?

WHAT?

  • It's a sentence that has two clauses (shorter sentences), an if clause and a main clause.
  • The whole sentence talks about a possibility in the present or the near future.
  • The if clause is the condition.
  • The main clause is the result of that condition.

WHAT DO CONDITIONAL SENTENCES TYPE I LOOK LIKE?

Actually, you've seen two of them before back in lesson 1, Getting Started.

EXAMPLES

WHAT'S A POSSIBILITY?

Imagine you're tossing a coin. It has two sides - the head and the tail.

When tossing it, two things can happen: either the head faces up or the tail faces up. You have two possibilities.

The word can be translated as khả năng in Vietnamese.

POSSIBILITY

WHAT'S A CONDITION?

CONDITION

You must have air and water to breathe and to live. That's a basic living condition.

You must have a coin to toss it. That's also a condition for tossing coins.

To put in simply, for something to happen, its condition must happen first. The word can be translated as điều kiện in Vietnamese.

WHEN CAN WE USE CONDITIONAL SENTENCES TYPE I?

WHEN?

We use them to talk about possibilities (something likely to happen) in the present or the future. Easy!

More examples:

  • If I toss a coin, I will see one of its two sides.
  • I'll buy you some snacks after school today if you're nice to me.
  • If we learn something many times, we won't forget it too quickly.

HOW CAN WE MAKE A SIMPLE CONDITIONAL SENTENCE TYPE I?

HOW?

You'll need two clauses in your sentence, a present clause with the word if and a future clause. They can switch positions.
