The PVI Model

Introduction

INTRODUCTION

"The PVI model states that the most important things to focus on when looking to progress in the workplace are Perceptions, Visibility and Influence. By managing these three factors individuals and businesses can get ahead."

The World of Work Project

Goals

The PVI model states that three factors that will help you being successful in the workplace are:

Goals

How you are perceived

How visible you are

Your ability to influence others

Perception

Perception

This model states you need to control the way you want others to perceive you. This way you will be perceived in a appreciative way.

Personal branding also argues this and both of them are influenced by marketing and public relations.

Steps

STEPS

  • STEP 1:

Understanding the current state of your own perspective

  • STEP 2:

Validate the current state through external feedback

  • STEP 3:

Define your future state

  • STEP 4:

Move from your previous state of perspective to your new one

Visibility

VISIBILITY

Visibility is about increasing how others are aware of you. We are able to do that with the help of two paths.

promoting yourself at work

Self

promotion

Promoting yourself can help develop the image you potray to others. The model calls out for these 3 tips:

  • The positive impact you make at work
  • Compliment others at work
  • Ask co-workers to tell others about all the good work you do

Becoming more visible at work

More visibility

This can be quite hard, but the approach will increase your visibilaty. By putting yourself out there, where people are already looking, will help them be more aware of you.

The model tells you 4 ways of achieving this:

  • Get assigned to important projects
  • Get face time with senior leaders
  • Share your ideas and use your voice
  • Become familiar and recognised

Familiarity Heurismatics

As an aside, the familiarity heurismatics supports the benefit of visibilaty.

People will value a familiar object more than an unfamiliar one.

This is one of the cognitive biases that most people experience.

familiarity heuristics

Influence

The last factor that the PVI model talks about is influence. Now that you know how you perceived and you are more visible, you should use that to influence others.

Influence

Tips

  • Influence upwards:

Tell your senior leaders how you've helped shape and deliver their goals

  • Influence downwards:

Setting direction, empowering, and creating followership

  • Influence on peers:

Collecting favours and supporting your peer group

Conclusion

To develop more how you want to be perceived learn about: personal values, motivation, self-awareness and character.

Consider the importance of showing who you really are in work, by showing your vulnerability.

All of this is important to gain the trust and to lead with authentic leadership.
