The Chemistry Mole

Presentation by Brysen Meyer

What is the Chemistry Mole?

The mole is a unit of measure used predominately in chemistry to describe extremely large or small values. The mole represents 6.022 X 10^23, which is incredibly large! The mole comes from Avogadro's number.

Introduction

How is the mole used?

The mole is used as a measurement for extremely large and small numbers. It is mainly used to describe an amount of smaller objects, like atoms and molecules, and it provides an easy way for these objects to be converted to grams.

Uses

Origins of the Mole

The number itself originates from Amedeo Avogadro, an early 19th century scientist who discovered that 6.022 X 10^23 is the amount of particles that are in 12.000 grams of carbon-12 particles. The mole describes the quantity of something that has that same number of particles.

Examples of moles

Examples

The mole is a huge number. To show you exactly how huge it is, here is a couple of examples to demonstrate the true size of a mole:

Example 1

If you had a mole of people, that would be 78 trillion times the amount of people currently alive, which is 7.7 billion!

Example 1

example 2

If you had a mole of one dollar bills, you would be almost 4.6 trillion times more rich than the richest man alive, Jeff Bezos, CEO and founder of Amazon.

Example 2

What is mole day?

Mole day is a day that has been celebrated annually since 1991 on October 23rd, from 6:02 AM to 6:02 PM, in reference to the number itself: 6.02 X 10^23. Mole day is celebrated to create interest in chemistry, and it is mainly celebrated at schools across the world with mole day activates. Happy mole day!
