BARNES

Barnes Foundation Controversy

In 2009, the premier of the art documentary “The Art of Steal” reignited the controversial relocation of Alfred C. Barnes’ private collection of art. When Barnes passed away, his $25 billion collection of art was moved from the Suburbs of Philadelphia to Downtown Philly, which was strictly against his will.

If I was in a leadership role at the Barnes Foundation, I would reconsider the relocation of the collection. Essentially, one main reason as to why the Barnes Foundation was forced to move was due its declining finances. Therefore, generating money through Barnes’ art collection is key when deciding the longevity of the foundation. It’s imperative that the foundation preserves Barnes’ beliefs and principles, which is why maintaining the collection for educational purposes is significant. Barnes refrained from commercializing the collection, though I do believe that making it public would generate the money needed to maintain the collection. I would strongly propose raising prices for the offered educational programs, and keeping it open to the public for a minimal amount of time. Therefore, the foundation would both profit off the public seeing Barnes’ astonishing art collection and have a steady source of money flowing in from the educational programs.
