Topics for Committee

Topic I:

The Right to Self-Determination

Topic I:

The Facts:

The UN Security Council has issued resolutions that have been disregarded in the past regarding a plebiscite to determine future state alliance (in the case of Kashmir).

Self-Determination is a topic that can create hostility within Member States.

Pakistan's Stance:

  • “Pakistan, as a UN member nation, has always focused on abiding by the international laws including the right to self-determination. Pakistan has raised its voice about the right to self-determination of Palestinians and Kashmiris on international form.”

  • President Mamnoon Hussain assured that Pakistan will continue to provide diplomatic, moral, and political support to the Kashmiris’ struggle for self-determination and against ISraeli occupation, Pakistan has called for urgent efforts to resolve the festering Middle East conflict. “Denial of the Palestinian right to self-determination is at the heart of unrest in the region.”

Our Ideas:

  • Reopening the Trusteeship Council
  • Highlighting and focusing on poltical, economic, social, cultural and educational advancements.
  • Discuss Kashmir

Our Ideas:

Trusteeship Council

Reopening and revitalizing the Trusteeship council. This will allow for a safe and effective forum for both parties to engage in peacceful negotiations.

Trusteeship Council

  • Under the Charter the Trusteeship Council is authorized to examine and discuss reports from the Administering Authority on the political, economic, social and educational advancement of the peoples of Trust Territories and, in consultation with the Administering Authority, to examine petitions from and undertake periodic and other special missions to Trust Territories

Furthermore

  • The claim that Kashmir participating in elections is a reflection of their desires is not true because of India's inability to recognize how oppresive their regime is in Kashmir.
  • What comes with territories like Kashmir and Palestine is a denial of fundamental human rights with large military presences in their occupation and the violence that comes along with that.
  • Troops using rape as a weapon of war inflicting terror upon local populations
  • Extrajudicial killings

Furthermore

TOPIC II:

The Elimination of all forms of Religious Intolerance

TOPIC II:

The Facts:

  • There has been a 23% increase in religious intolerance.
  • State Actors and Non-State Actors have both contributed to the persecution of religious minorities within Member States.
  • We have seen this in Myanmar where over 650,000 have fleed since August in fear of persecution.

Pakistan's Stance

Religious intolerance destabilizes our communities and the international community.

  • We have to create a world that is more understanding.
  • If we fail to do this, the international community will be complicit in the horrors of intolerance.

Pakistan's Stance

Our Ideas

  • Utilize the United Religions Initiative. This organization encourages people from all religions to have effective dialogues on problems.

  • Establishment of bodies like the URI in order to foster cooperation and communication between different religious groups in order to lessen stigmas associated with religion which lead to hate crimes and acts of persecution

  • Promote religious cooperation through the OIC

Our Ideas

Furthermore

  • Rebuild cooperation through the US and OIC under new administration; in 2011 the General Assembly passed a resolution supporting religious tolerance (passed by the joint efforts of the US and OIC).
  • Condemns the stereotyping, profiling and stigmatization of people based on their religion and urges countries to take action to address and combat religious intolerance, hate speech and discrimination
  • The resolution asks states to use means such as education, interfaith dialogue, and the training of government officials to prevent religious discrimination and to advance religious tolerance

Topic III:

Ensuring Equitable Education Access

Topic III:

  • 100 MILLION children lack access to education in rural areas
  • 50% of refugee children lack access to school.
  • The destabilization of areas led children at risk to vulnerabilities and exploitations.
  • Equitable access to education is important because it will allow us to close poverty and gender disparity gaps.

Facts

Pakistan's Stance

It is in our Constitution to ensure that everyone has access to education.

Our Ideas

  • Utilize UNESCO and UNICEF to expand education access to children.
  • We want to increase access to secondary education.
  • Furthermore, we wanted to increase childrens access to education by using technology.

Our Tactics

  • Focus on children in refugee camps.
  • Try to increase access to children in rural areas.
  • Work with South Asia and African Member States.
  • Utilize UNESCO, UNICEF, UNDP, and Member States funding.
