Canonization Process

Step One

  • The person must have been dead for five years
  • The bishop of where the person died or is buried is who typically begins the process
  • Called a canidate at this time

Exceptions

  • Pope has the authority to Waive the five year waiting period
  • This was done both for St. Mother Teresa and St. Pope John Paul II (only a month after death)

  • Died Dec. 22 1917 in Chicago Illinois
  • Cardinal George Mundelein of Chicago launched the process of her canonization in 1928

  • Happens after sufficient evidence of the person's virtue and life is found.
  • Is sent to the Congregation for the Causes of the Saints
  • In this stage the body is exhumed and relics are taken
  • the declaration of Non Cultus (no cult) and Nil Obstat (nothing stands in the way) are also made at this Point
  • Then called Servant of God

  • Exhumed in 1931 and her body was moved to West Park, N.Y.,
  • Body was then moved in 1933 and now lies in the chapel of the Blessed Mother Cabrini High School in New York City

Step Three

  • After sufficient evidence is gathered the Congregation sends a recomendation to the Pope
  • Pope then makes a proclamation on the Servant of God's heroic virtue
  • Receives the Title Venerable

What can Now be Done

  • Has No Feast Day or Churches
  • Prayer Cards Can be made and other materials to encourage prayer for a miracle

  • For a martyr the pope only needs to make a declaration of martyrdom
  • all confessors or non-martyrs must have a miracle proven to have happened by their intercession
  • most often medical
  • miracle must be instantaneous, complete and lasting
  • called "Blessed"

  • The first miracle attributed to her involved a newborn infant having its sight restored after beign blinded by excess silver nitrate.
  • Beatified by Pope Pius XI on November 13, 1938.

  • One more miracle must be identified and proven
  • a feast day is assinged for the Universal Church to celebrate
  • Statement by Church that the person certainly is experiencing the Beatific Vision
  • Second miracle must occur after first.
  • Called a Saint
