The Body of Christ

Don't avoid it...

...because you can't!

Unity

UNITY

The Father and Christ

The Father and Christ

"Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I say unto you I speak not from myself: but the Father abiding in me doeth his works. Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works’ sake." (John 14:10-11)

Christ and us

Christ and us

"Neither for these only do I pray, but for them also that believe on me through their word; that they may all be one; even as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be in us: that the world may believe that thou didst send me. And the glory which thou hast given me I have given unto them; that they may be one, even as we are one; I in them, and thou in me, that they may be perfected into one; that the world may know that thou didst send me, and lovedst them, even as thou lovedst me." (John 17:20-23)

For what purpose?

For what purpose?

"In that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you. He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself unto him... If a man love me, he will keep my word: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him." (John 14:20-23)

To keep the commandments?

The commandment of love

"Even as the Father hath loved me, I also have loved you: abide ye in my love. If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and abide in his love. These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be made full. This is my commandment, that ye love one another, even as I have loved you. Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends." (John 15:9-13)

Brotherly love

Brotherly love

"These things I command you, that ye may love one another." (John 15:17)

"And this is his commandment, that we should believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, even as he gave us commandment." (1John 3:23)

Not theoretical love

"My little children, let us not love in word, neither with the tongue; but in deed and truth." (1John 3:18)

We will come back to this with a few Bible examples

The Body of Christ

BODY

One body

One body

"Even so ought husbands also to love their own wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his own wife loveth himself: for no man ever hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as Christ also the church; because we are members of his body. For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife; and the two shall become one flesh. This mystery is great: but I speak in regard of Christ and of the church." (Ephesians 5:28-32)

One Spirit

One Spirit

"For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of the body, being many, are one body; so also is Christ. For in one Spirit were we all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether bond or free; and were all made to drink of one Spirit." (1Corinthians 12:12-13)

Body building

Body building

"Even so ought husbands also to love their own wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his own wife loveth himself: for no man ever hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as Christ also the church; because we are members of his body. For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife; and the two shall become one flesh. This mystery is great: but I speak in regard of Christ and of the church." (Ephesians 5:28-32)

How does He nourish and cherish His body?

"But now they are many members, but one body. And the eye cannot say to the hand, I have no need of thee: or again the head to the feet, I have no need of you. Nay, much rather, those members of the body which seem to be more feeble are necessary: and those parts of the body, which we think to be less honorable, upon these we bestow more abundant honor; and our uncomely parts have more abundant comeliness; whereas our comely parts have no need: but God tempered the body together, giving more abundant honor to that part which lacked; that there should be no schism in the body; but that the members should have the same care one for another." (1Corinthians 12:20-25)

Christ builds up His body through us

"that there should be no schism in the body; but that the members should have the same care one for another." (1Corinthians 12:20-25)

"to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ," (Ephesians 4:12)

Individual Christianity?

Individual Christianity?

"The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not a communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not a communion of the body of Christ? seeing that we, who are many, are one bread, one body: for we are all partake of the one bread." (1Corinthians 10:16-17)

Common goal

GOAL

One hope

One hope

"There is one body, and one Spirit, even as also ye were called in one hope of your calling;" (Ephesians 4:4)

Possible only together

Possible only together

"but speaking truth in love, we may grow up in all things into him, who is the head, even Christ; from whom all the body fitly framed and knit together through that which every joint supplieth, according to the working in due measure of each several part, maketh the increase of the body unto the building up of itself in love." (Ephesians 4:15-16)

The body can grow to its fulness only when each and every member functions properly!

Pray for each other

Pray for each other

"with all prayer and supplication praying at all seasons in the Spirit, and watching thereunto in all perseverance and supplication for all the saints, and on my behalf, that utterance may be given unto me in opening my mouth, to make known with boldness the mystery of the gospel," (Ephesians 6:18-19)

Restore each other

"Confess therefore your sins one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The supplication of a righteous man availeth much in its working." (James 5:16)

Take part in each other's daily life

"Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ." (Galatians 6:2)

Real relationships

"My little children, let us not love in word, neither with the tongue; but in deed and truth." (1John 3:18)

Apostolic examples

Before Pentecost

"These all with one accord continued stedfastly in prayer, with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren." (Acts 1:14)

Fruits of unity

"And all that believed were together, and had all things common; and they sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all, according as any man had need. And day by day, continuing stedfastly with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread at home, they took their food with gladness and singleness of heart, praising God, and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to them day by day those that were saved." (Acts 2:44-47)

Signs and wonders

"And they, when they heard it, lifted up their voice to God with one accord, and said, O Lord, thou that didst make the heaven and the earth and the sea, and all that in them is:... while thy stretchest forth thy hand to heal; and that signs and wonders may be done through the name of thy holy Servant Jesus. And when they had prayed, the place was shaken wherein they were gathered together; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spake the word of God with boldness." (Acts 4:24,30-31)

Power, grace, prosperity

"And the multitude of them that believed were of one heart and soul: and not one of them said that aught of the things which he possessed was his own; but they had all things common. And with great power gave the apostles their witness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus: and great grace was upon them all. For neither was there among them any that lacked: for as many as were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the prices of the things that were sold, and laid them at the apostles’ feet: and distribution was made unto each, according as any one had need." (Acts 4:32-35)

God's family

God's family

"While he was yet speaking to the multitudes, behold, his mother and his brethren stood without, seeking to speak to him. And one said unto him, Behold, thy mother and thy brethren stand without, seeking to speak to thee. But he answered and said unto him that told him, Who is my mother? and who are my brethren? And he stretched forth his hand towards his disciples, and said, Behold, my mother and my brethren! For whosoever shall do the will of my Father who is in heaven, he is my brother, and sister, and mother." (Matthew 12:46-50)

Our family

"Jesus said, Verily I say unto you, There is no man that hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, or mother, or father, or children, or lands, for my sake, and for the gospel’s sake, but he shall receive a hundredfold now in this time, houses, and brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, with persecutions; and in the world to come eternal life." (Mark 10:29-30)

True discipleship

True discipleship

Are you already Jesus' disciple?

"Go ye therefore, and make disciples of all the nations..."

(Matthew 28:19)

"A new commandment I give unto you, that ye love one another; even as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another." (John 13:34-35)
