The League of Nations was founded on the 10th of January 1920 by the Paris peace conference. It was made to look over all border disputes,, social affairs and world dissarmerment
The League contained the Assembly and the Council. The Assembly included 42 representatives and met once a year and when they make a unanimous decision it goes to the Council. However the Council included 4 members (France, Japan, Italy and The United Kingdom) and they met up to 5 times a year and after they make their nonunanimous decision action takes place.
When it comes to the league there are some main failures of the structure. The League didn't have an army so people were less scared to go against the league. The league having unanimous decision could be a good thing however people might dissagree as it would increase the negotation time and sometimes some things won't even happen.
When it comes to the league it did have its successes. There are 3 sections like any normal government. There is an international court of justice that investigates problems and brings them up to the assembly. The league has 3 main sanctions. There is a moral comdemnation, then economic sanctions and then military action. This will cause major disruption to a country that intends to oppose the league.
Throughout the years the league existed membership was always a big problem.
Germany wasn't allowed to join the league because France hated them and they accepted full blame for WW1.
The USSR wasn't allowed to join because the League didn't like communists and the russians in general.
The USA refused to join the league even though it was their idea because they didnt want to participate in international tensions and be dragged into a baltic war which had nothing to do with them.
The United Kingdom and france were not keen to lead the league as it was the idea of the United states of America and they were both busy rebuilding their economy.
The leagues strengths were that with unanimous voting in the assembly everyone would like the deal in some shape or form because if they didn't they wouldn't agree. Their were 42 members meaning that if you attacked one you attacked all.
When it comes to social affairs the League didn't do much wrong. They introduced 'Nansen Passports' and gave them to 450,000 refugees. There was also a typhus outbreak contained and poisonous lead was banned from inside paint and they freed 200,000 slaves which were 15% of sierra leones population.
When it comes to the leagues sucess dissarmerment isn't something that is usualy brought up. And this is for good reason as the league didnt do much good when it came to dissarmerment. The only thing that actualy happened was the locarno treaties and that was between France and germany and not through the league but instead through the United Kingdom.
When it comes to the leagues success border disputes are a debatable conversation. There are some instances where the league did well however there are also some times where they didn't do as good.
When it comes the league there are many failures. There are a few examples where they show baised towards one side, where they made a decision which angered both sides and even sometimes not doing anything
France and Belgium invade German Ruhr (A heavily industrialized valley) region because they hadn’t paid the reparations fee. German civilians engaged in acts of passive resistance during which 130 were killed. The league did nothing because France is a key member, later led to right wing and left-wing movements in Germany with the most famously known one being Hitler launching a coup. The “Dawes plan” made by the US helped resolve the conflict because they would give money to Germany and have a longer amount of time that they would have to pay the US back.

A port between Lithuania and Poland which is a “Free city” trough the treaty of Versailles has been seized by Lithuania. The league gave the area surrounded by Memel to Lithuania, but Memel was kept as a free city.
Treaty of Versailles said plebiscite. Riots break out and an inter-allied occupation was stationed there. There were Three Polish uprisings and the Germans even set a German paramilitary unit to the region. There was a 2nd plebiscite to find out where to draw the border splitting up Germans and polish people by votes. Poland received 1/3rd of the land and Germany whas given the rest.
Teschen is a small town with valuable coal mines. Poland and Czechoslovakia are fighting for control of it. The League gave the bulk of the town to Poland, but the slice given to Czechoslovakia contained most of the coal mines. Although no more violence occurred, the territory remained a source of dispute right up until the outbreak of World War Two.
When it comes to the succes of the league there are a few which often get casted over by the failures. In many of these situations the league acted wisely not angering any of the two sides, not showing any baised towards the country which contributes the most and not doing nothing.
This port, subject of a debate between Yugoslavia and Italy, was given ‘free city’ status by the Treaty of Versailles. Italian nationalists led by d’Annunzio have seized Fiume anyway. The League did nothing about this. In the end, the Italian government bombed D’Annunzio into surrendering after 15 months. Five years later they formally annexed the territory. The League did nothing about this either.
The war of the stray dog,”. Greece and Bulgarian troops are stationed on the border when a Greece soldier crossed the border to recover a stray dog but Bulgarian troops mistake him running over as an attack and he is shot. Greece is outraged and attack .The league made Greece to withdraw and was paid 0 compensation for the death of their soldier. Greece later called the league hypocritical because they had to pay compensation at Corfu.
Dispute between Sweden and Finland and want the league to decide what to do. There are 6500 islands which are militarily valuable. The league said that the islands would remain with Finland but remained demilitarized
Italy under newly elected Mussolini seized the island Corfu from Greece after an Italian general was murdered by Greece terrorists when visiting the island. The league decided that Greece give money to the league who would later give it to Italy after they retreated out of Corfu. But later Mussolini argued that this was a sign that the league couldn’t trust the Italians, so the league gave the money to them directly and then they left the island.
