Resilience

Resilience

re·sil·ience \ ri-ˈzil-yən(t)s \

1: the capability of a strained body to recover its size and shape after deformation caused especially by compressive stress

2: an ability to recover from or adjust easily to misfortune or change

Definition

Resilience is like a ruler.

A resilient person is like a bendy ruler --- able to withstand the hardships and pressure and bounce back.

A person who lacks resilience is like a stiff ruler --- unable to adapt to the weight and snaps.

Possible Scenarios

Scenario

Whether you are a Y1 or Y4, our resilience is constantly being put up to the test. Here are some possible scenarios we may relate to and how to cope. Do not worry, you are not alone!

Post-HBL period

What should I do?

After months of home-based learning, Lynn is used to waking up at 7 in the morning just in time for school. However, now that she has returned to school, she has to wake up at 5.30 in the morning as she stays further from school. Lynn has some difficulty staying focused in school due to a change in her sleep schedule.

Striking a balance after returning to school

Plan out an alternative sleep schedule that will suit your usual school routine! If you have difficulty focusing at first, do not be afraid to turn to your teachers, friends for help.

Managing stress

What should we do?

Mental pressure

Emily is used to being the top in class, top in school. Everyone around her expects her to be smart and intelligent, it places a lot of stress on her. When she joins RGS, she realizes that everyone is as talented and hardworking as her. She is under immense pressure and doubts herself when she is no longer at the top. What can she do to adapt?

1. Accept these expectations

- Understand that failure is normal

- Talk to those who give you stress

- Explain how it negatively affects you

2. Be confident!

- Do a self reflection:

- strength / weaknesses

3. Be positive

- Have a growth mindset

- the power of "yet"

-. Look for positive role models

E.g. Learn from your peers around you

4. Don't keep it in!

- Talk to someone you trust

- Write your thoughts down

Empathy

Empathy promotes resilience. Here's how you can exercise empathy to help yourself and others.

Put yourself in the shoes of others

Understand different perspectives

  • Allows you to resolve conflicts effectively
  • Think about how others would react to your own problems

Support Others With Empathy

Provide support to others

Being empathetic can help others to be more resilient too. Feeling what others are feeling allows you to support them and seek help for them if needed.

Being Sensitive

Be sensitive

  • Always be mindful of your tone, words, facial expressions and actions that you use
  • It is of utmost importance that you do not come across as too aggressive
  • Be supportive and encouraging, not commanding
  • At the end of the day, it is up to your friend whether she wants to follow your advice or not.

Empathizing with friends
