HOW CAN TEACHERS BE ABLE TO NURTURE THE SPIRITUAL AND EMOTIONAL LIVES OF INNER CITIES CHILDREN FACING VIOLENCE AND CRIME EVERYDAY ?
According to the Department of Justice 60 percent of American children are exposed to violence, crimes or abuse in their homes, schools and communities.
Children are more likely to be exposed to violence than adults.
Geoffrey Canada saw how violence and crime affect the spiritual and emotional lives of children. He decided to take action. He says:
"I want people to understand the crisis that our children face and I want people to act."
Through Martial Arts he enriched the lives of inner cities children often were victim of violence and crimes.
Martial arts children are able to convey energy of fear and apprehension, into courage and resilience.
The Strong Child
"Children need heroes now more than ever because the poor children of this nation live with monsters every day "
"...so we must stand up and be visible heroes, fighting for our children"
"I'm trying to bring magic into the lives of these kids. To bring a sense of wonder and amazement."
Canada's story is not just of a martial arts teacher, role model or mentor but also of a spiritual warrior.
" I talk to them about values, about violence, about hope. I try to build within each one a reservoir of strenght that they can draw from as they face the countless tribulations small and large that poor children face every day.
Martial arts and other body mind activities can tapped into spiritual energy: creating resilience, spiritual warriors are able to challenges fear, false beliefs and judgements.
Spiritual Warrior
"Life offers us the opportunity to become a Spiritual Warrior.
A warrior is one who bravely goes into those dark areas within
themselves to ferret out the Truth of their being.
It takes great courage, stamina and endurance to
become a Spiritual Warrior.
The path is narrow, the terrain rough and rocky.
You will walk alone: through the dark caves,
up those steep climbs and through the dense thick forest.
You will meet your dark side. The faces of fear, deceit, and
sadness all await your arrival........."

If nothing else,
say this is true.
That even as we hurt, we hoped.
That even as we tired, we tried.
That we'll forever
Be tied together, victorious.
