Hardship: The Orphanage
When April was just six years old, she was taken away from her parents and forced to join an orphanage. At the orphanage, she was forced to shave her hair, eat food she didn't want, and stay away from her sister. It wasn't a good environment.
Hardships: DeRosiers
April's second home in the foster system was with Mrs. DeRosier, a truly nasty woman. She forced April into a life of slavery, where April was constantly doing chores for them while being told that she was just a filthy 'half-breed.'
Highlight: Escaping the DeRosiers
After spending seven long years with the DeRosiers, April managed to convince her new social worker, Mr Wendell, to make a more thorough inspection of the home she was living in. This convinced Mr Wendell that she was not being treated well, and that she needed to move to the Steindalls with her sister.
Hardship: Living with Bob
April soon finishes school and marries a man named Bob Radcliff. This marriage seemed fine at first, but it eventually crashed and burned as April discovered that Bob had been cheating on her with Heather. This damaged her self-confidence, though it also made her a ton of money when she sued him.
Hardship: The Sexual Assault
A short while after the divorce, April visited her sister in Winnipeg after hearing that she was ill. During this visit, a car came by and she was dragged into it. She was then sexually assaulted by two men as many different slurs were hurled her way. She only barely managed to escape.
Neither Hardship/Hightlight: The Suicide
After a long fight about Cheryl becoming a prostitute, Cheryl jumped off the Louise Bridge. While it was heartbreaking that Cheryl's life had to end so soon, it ended up reminding April to find pride in her heritage, and to look toward improving the future. It was a blessing in disguise.
