1519 - Hernan Cortes arrives in Mexico

1525 - The first ship of slaves from Africa arrives in the Americas

1528 - History of the Indies

1530s - Pizarro's conquest of Peru

1542 - Spain promulgates the New Laws

Maize This was the main crop cultivated by American Indians.

Christopher Columbus An Italian explorer who stumbled upon the New World after convincing the Spanish monarchs that he could sail across the Atlantic to India.

“God, Gold, Glory” Early European explorers were motivated by a desire to spread Christianity, enrich themselves and their monarch, and gain glory for discovering new lands.

Encomienda System A forced labor system developed by the Spanish that required American Indians.

1550-1600

1550 - Spain abolished encomienda system and established repartimiento system

At this point, Spain was being known as the "Black Legend."

1565 - Pedro Menendez de Aviles lead a colonizing expedition in Florida.

1598 - Juan de Onate led 400 people north of Mexico to establish a settlement.

These 50 years were filled with many failed expeditions and civil uprisings that led to a massive decrease in Native population. For example, after Onate's nephew was killed, he destroyed Acoma (800 natives).

1600-1650

1607 - The first English colony in the New World is founded at Jamestown.

1608-1609 - Champlain establishes Quebec; Hudson claims New Netherland

1610 - Santa Fe established

1614 - John Rolfe marries Pocahontas

1619 - First black slaves arrive in VA

- House of Burgesses established

1620 - The Pilgrims sign the Mayflower Compact before settling at Plymouth Colony.

1637 - Anne Hutchinson (1591–1643) is banished from Massachusetts for organizing religious meetings for women.

1651 - First Navigation Act passed by Parliment

1664 - English seize New Netherland, which becomes New York

1669 - The fundamental Constitutions of Carolina

1670 - First English settlers arrive in Carolina

1749 - Ohio Company awarded land from VA

1750-1800

1754-The Seven Years War begins between Great Britan and France.

1760-George III assumes the British Throne

1763-Seven years were ends as the French surrender all territories in North America.

1754-Albany Plan of Union drafted by Benjamin Franklin as a plan to unite the British Colonies under a stronger Centeral Government.

1763-Pontisc's Rebbelion takes place as several Native American tribes fought agianst British authority following the Seven Years War.

1763-British Government issues the Proclamation of 1763 that effectivily barred westward movement.

1764-Britsh authoirty institutes the Sugar Act

1765-The Stamp Act is institued in the United States by the British Government.

1769-Father Serra establishes the first mission in California.

1775-Thomas Piane publishes "Comoon Sense"

1775-1783-Revolutionary War Begins

1776-Declaration Of Independence is Signed on July 4th

1787-Articles of Confederation is Dragted and Established

1786-Shay's Rebellion Takes Place and shows weekness in the Federal Government under the Articles of Confederation

1787-Constituitonal Convention is held.

1788-Constituion is Ratified and Adopted

1790-Naturalization Act

1791-The Bill of Rights is Ratified
