GBUX 1

Think of three examples that satisfy or violate known (or intuitive) UX design guidelines.

Use your common sense of what good-bad-ugly user experience is for you and the way it is defined through the course material.

Think in terms of:

Usefulness, learnability, desirability, satisfaction, operability, flexibility, robustness, accessibility, ease of use, aesthetics, efficiency, findability, understandability, consistency, feedback,

error prevention, metaphors,

affordances, etc.

Santiago

Tell us a little bit about your thought process in identifying these design examples:

How did you come up with them?

I thought of apps that I use daily, and what my experience is with their UI/UX designs.

Nicole

Tell us a little bit about your thought process in identifying these design examples:

How did you come up with them?

I brainstormed examples of websites I had seen in the past, and different aspects that stood out to me.

Nicole

Where did you come up with them?

These three examples of designs were all websites on Google that I found.

Why did you come up with them?

These websites helped me to think more about the UX features that are in websites, which is something I will pay attention to in the future

What did you come up with?

I am...

A music lover

I am

The Good

Pinterest

[product/system title]Rock Sox Front Fork

The Good

Great learnability. Grid layout with minimalist design, with a pin icon to add a picture to a board that you create. Great aesthetics, with a home page catered to each user. Great ease of use to create boards.

[rationale]The Fox Front

The Bad

ZARA

[product/system title]Rock Sox Front Fork

The Bad

VERY bad efficiency. More like an edieditorial than online store. Aesthetic, but focus should be on showing the entire product. No ease of use to find a specific product, overly minimalistic.

[rationale]The Fox Front

The Ugly

Berkshire Hathaway

[product/system title]Rock Sox Front Fork

The Ugly

Very poor usability, it is hard to find information easily. Bad accessibility,

outdated design, and text is very small. Very bad aesthetics

[rationale]The Fox Front

Tara

Tell us a little bit about your thought process in identifying these design examples:

How did you come up with them?

I want to discuss a product that I have had extensive experience with as well as tried different kinds, therefore I chose headphones.

Where did you come up with them?

Tara

I thought of 3 options based on the headphones that I have used most frequently, and therefore have had the most experience with their features.

Why did you come up with them?

When purchasing somehting as expensive as bluetooth headphones, it is a good idea to look at all elements of the user experience to make a worthwhile investment/purchase.

What did you come up with?

The Good

Soundcore Life Q30

[product/system title]Rock Sox Front Fork

The Good

These have a variety of features including 3 different noise-cancelling modes. They also have features related to longevity use; for example they have a long battery life and are comfortable on the ears.

[rationale]The Fox Front

The Bad

Beats Solo 3

[product/system title]Rock Sox Front Fork

These perform well regarding technical features; they have clear sound and a long battery life. However they fail in durability (my pair snapped in half). Additionally, they can become uncomfortable after prolonged wear.

The Bad

[rationale]The Fox Front

The Ugly

Lenovo ThinkPlus TH30

[product/system title]Rock Sox Front Fork

I am

The Good

Taco Bell App

[product/system title]Rock Sox Front Fork

The Good

Aesthetically pleasing interface, high learnability and usability, with all features clearly labled and a rewards system that is genuinely rewaring. Ordering in the app is efficient and easyily customizable.

The Bad

Sonos App

[product/system title]Rock Sox Front Fork

The Bad

Inefficient, takes too long to connect to system or won't connect at all. Poor findability, searching for songs or artists is very tedious. Poor design, causing volume and queue features to be difficult to access and change

[rationale]The Fox Front

The Ugly

NBA Website

[product/system title]Rock Sox Front Fork

The Ugly

Overcrowded interface with aesthetically displeasing white background makes for poor learnability and findability. It also is prone to errors when logging in, causing trouble when trying to watch games.

How did you come up with them?

I considered various products that I use in my day-to-day operations.

Tommy

Where did you come up with them?

I came up with them most of them while at my desk, working on other homework assignments.

Why did you come up with them?

Desmos is the only one I use willingly, WeBWork isn't too bad but I have definitely noticed its issues, and most of my experiences with Capstone have been dealing with its complexity.

What did you come up with?

I am...

very near-sighted

I am

The Good

Desmos Graphing Calculator

[product/system title]Rock Sox Front Fork

The Good

Has high natural mapping and consistency, since it is very similar to a physical graphing calculator and takes into account common conventions such as a carat (^) for exponents. Also provides clear feedback when a function is invalid or may be too complex to display accurately.

[rationale]The Fox Front

The Bad

WeBWork

[product/system title]Rock Sox Front Fork

The Bad

Despite having feedback, lacking in constraints and will allow the user to use a guess even if their answer uses invalid characters. Also does not allow the user to review previous answers, and, depending on the question, can have low understandability.

[rationale]The Fox Front

The Ugly

PASCO Capstone

[product/system title]Rock Sox Front Fork

The Ugly

Low understandability and visibility, due to cluttered icons, which themselves have low consistency and are unclear (ex. Google Drive-esque icon for Data Summary). Lacking in formatting options that can result in low attractiveness, such as with the graph above.

[rationale]The Fox Front

The Bad

Apple Weather

[product/system title]Rock Sox Front Fork

The Bad

More mispredictions than competitors which shows lack of error prevention, not as many forecasting features as weatherbug impedes robustness

[rationale]The Fox Front

The Ugly

Apple Music

[product/system title]Rock Sox Front Fork

The Ugly

Horrible personalized statistics and recommendations hinder desirability, Many bugs such as duplicate songs in playlists show bad error prevention, mediocre aesthetics relative to competition

[rationale]The Fox Front

Tell us a little bit about your thought process in identifying these design examples:

How did you come up with them?

I think of the apps that I use frequently or familiar with.

Zhiyang

Where did you come up with them?

I thought of the applications while in front of the desk and going through apps I have on my phone and computer.

Why did you come up with them?

I use Steam pretty often and I had a good experience with it, and in the meantime I forgot to turn off the school vpn which gave me a hard time connecting to certain apps, and then I got hungrey and thought of Doordash and how bad it was.

What did you come up with?

I am...

Passionate Gamer

I am

The Good

Steam

[product/system title]Rock Sox Front Fork

The Good

Steam has great learnability and it is easy to understand the functions you encounter. The search, personal settings and filters are easy to find and in places in line with common practise.

[rationale]The Fox Front

The Bad

DoorDash

[product/system title]Rock Sox Front Fork

The DoorDash app design is generally aesthetic but there are function that are buggy which shows a lack of usability, there's also no helpful feedback.

[rationale]The Fox Front

Apple News

[product/system title]Rock Sox Front Fork

The Good

Apple News has an immediately learnable and understandable interface that delivers what you want to see without having to search for it. Highly aethetic and simplified.

[rationale]The Fox Front

The Bad

Spotify

[product/system title]Rock Sox Front Fork

The Bad

Spotify is generally an aethetic and convenient platform, however, multiple features are not accessible on the app and require the user to find them online. This process makes the platform less understandable, efficient, and easy to use.

[rationale]The Fox Front

The Ugly

Baseboard Heater

[product/system title]Rock Sox Front Fork

The Ugly

The adjustment knob is not marked and therefore is difficult to operate because of low understandability. There is tactile feedback when spinning the knob that does not react consistently with what you would expect. Additionally, the knob is easily turned on accident, making it difficult to return to previous level

Trivia Crack

The Good

The metaphor of the spinning wheel to select a category at random mimics that of a real-life carnival wheel. This is an explicit affordance. The bright, rainbow colors emphasize that this application is a game and that its primary purpose is fun. It is easy to track progress both through the crown bar that fills up a slot everytime a question is answered correctly. Additionally, the scores are listed on the respective sides of the user they are associated with which minimizes confusion. The keyword “vs” also emphasizes that it is a multiplayer game and that the primary goal for users is to win. Lastly, the popup box on the bottom helps users get started and clears any confusion in a concise matter. The icons on the wheel are also cognitive affordances as they relate to the subject they represent.

The Bad

Microsoft Edge Search Engine

[product/system title]Rock Sox Front Fork

The Bad

Far too many unsolicited pop ups. Additionally, it feels very commercialized and consumerism is pushed very heavily. It’s super easy to accidentally click on an article or a website since they are all close together. The blue color of some of the characters/words and the ability to hover over them indicate that they should be hyperlinks, based on the pattern affordance of the pre-established convention of hyperlinks. However, some of them open new web pages and some do not. Additionally, there is a lack of information such that somebody who has never traveled via Amtrak might be confused. Some late trains are highlighted and others are not, with no reasoning given. Aesthetically, it’s unappealing to look at and also has a large ad placed towards the center top of the screen and its location increases the likelihood of a user accidentally clicking it. There is also a lack of customizability in that it is only in military time. There’s also a lot of excess information that an ordinary traveler would not need.

It also made me realize my preference for Zoom after comparing the two platforms. The Ugly I came up when I searched for a summer class at home for transfer credits.

Why did you come up with them?

Many individuals rely on the online meeting platforms and course listings on institution websites. Consequently, giving importance to user experience is essential. Grasping the elements that contribute to effective UI/UX is significant for engineers to design high-quality products.

Zoom

The Good

- Metaphors (icons like house-home, calendar) & Cognitive Affordances (button and tab labels) help users understand.

- Sensory Affordance (status light).

- Clean and uncluttered interface design with good aesthetics and simplicity

- Consistency in button size and shape.

- High Operability (interactive buttons

and navigation tabs).

The Bad

Google Meet

[product/system title]Rock Sox Front Fork

The Bad

Good in providing feedback and error prevention (error message and unable to join) when entering invalid code/link. Downside in consistency and understandability that Join and Enter both appear side-by-side on the same screen can be confusing (click on Join at the first glance). Bad findablity for information about features like where to change virtual background.

The Ugly

[product/system title]Rock Sox Front Fork

The Ugly

- Bad in consistency: Scheduled checkbox doesn't have save button.

- Bad in understandability: what does the Scheduled checkbox do? -> The labels and cognitive affordances are not helpful.

- Poor in attractiveness/aesthetics: No spacing between search bar and search button. Save button goes outside of the box space. Navigation bar stays on top blocking views.

The Good

Netflix

The Good

Netflix’s features during video play follow user-centered design. The "Skip Intro" button showcases flexibility and efficiency by allowing users to bypass repetitive intros if they want with a single click. This helps reduce cognitive load by streamlining the viewing process. Also, the overall navigation screen shows discoverability, with user controls being easily accessible but not obstructive to the video.

The Bad

PBS app

[product/system title]Rock Sox Front Fork

turning auto play on

redirected to live screen

The Bad

The PBS app’s user experience lacks predictability, consistency, and user control. Its autoplay function selects a different series rather than the subsequent episode. At times, the app redirects to promotional or live content, requiring users to backtrack to the main page to access their chosen show. This shows poor feedback and an increase in the cognitive load while navigating back to the desired content.

The Ugly

UVA Collab

[product/system title]Rock Sox Front Fork

The Ugly

UVACollab’s interface has poor visibility with the initial screen, which is information heavy. This decreases the visibility of essential information. It also has low consistency due to the inconsistent use of icons across different courses. This decreases efficiency because it forces users to relearn symbol meanings in different classes, ultimately increasing cognitive load.

The Good

This light clicker has high usability and learnability. For example, the row only has two buttons: on and off. In addition, the clicker is useful as its fuctinality allows for increased control of lighting in one location.

The Bad

The Bad

This stanley may have good aesthetics (popular), but it doesn't have strong functionality. The hole for the straw is too big resulting in leaks and unintentional spills (sell 3rd party leak preventors). So, while this product is easy to understand and has high emotional impact because of its aesthetics, it isn't convenient to use.
