This event was important because Jonas has never seen anything like it. He's never seen something like it so close, and because it was really close, he was frightened."Squinting toward the sky, he had seen the sleek jet, almost a blur at its highspeed."
This event was important because it was so unexpected and disturbing to Jonas. Jonas never felt or had dreams like the stirrings."The feelings you described, were your first stirrings. Father and I have been expecting it to happen to you. It happens to everyone."
This event was important because Jonas didn't know what to expect. Once his number got skipped, he was shocked and embarrassed."She had skipped him. He saw the others glance at him, embarrassed, and then avert their eyes really quicky."
This event was important because Jonas learns about a traditional celebration. But most importantly, he learns about love, which was new to him."There were colored lights: red, green, and yellow, twinkling from a tree which was oddly placed inside the room."
After Jonas learns about Christmas and love, he asks his parents if they love him. They tell him that that kind of language doesn't belong in the community anymore because it wouldn't make it function the right way."Our community won't function smoothly if people don't use precise language like "do you love me"."
This event is important because it's where Jonas feels pain for the first time. When he see's the memory of the war, he saw people in horrible pain and even dead. He was scared and frightened. "Im glad you gave that memory to me. It was interesting, and now I understand that there will always be pain."
This event is important because Jonas didn't know what color was. He saw lots of color in the memories but not in real life. Color was taken away from the community so people weren't alike and had sameness. "As days and weeks went by, Jonas learned everything he knew through the memories. The names of color were more easier to remember and he started seeing color in his life."
This event was important because he finally got to see and understand the actual meaning of release. His parents told him the wrong meaning to release, and once he found out they lied to him, he was very mad."Once again, he saw the face of the light-haired bloody soldier as life left his eyes. He killed it! My father killed the newborn!"
This event is important because once Jonas found out the real meaning and what really goes on with a release, he was scared for Gabriel and didn't want him to be killed. So Jonas took Gabe and started to leave the community. He started to also give Gabriel a memory of a boat. "Jonas quite deliberately placed his hand on Gabe's back, releasing the rest of the calm day on the lake."
This event is important because when Jonas learned everything about release and that his brother was going to be released he was worried, but wanted to save Gabe. When Jonas left the community he left all his memories behind because he wanted the entire community to feel what he felt. "The worst part of holding memories is not the pain, it's the loneliness. Memories need to be shared to everyone."
