Synthesis

Synthesis Definition

Definition

Two or more substances react to produce a single new substance.

How do we identify synthesis?

How to identify..

1. Count the reactants.

  • Remember reactants are always on the left side of the arrow.
  • May have more than two reactants.

2. Check that there is only one product.

  • In synthesis there should only be ONE product.
  • If there is more than one product, it is NOT synthesis.

Ps. Synthesis is the opposite of decomposition.

Examples

2 Ca0+2 H20 2Ca(OH)2

A+B AB

2CO+O2 2CO2

C+02 CO2

remember the defenition...Two or more substances react to produce a single new substance.

Is this a synthesis reaction?

Mini Game

In this "game" you will have to identify if the reaction is synthesis or not.

Synthesis or not?

Na + Cl --> NaCl

CO2 + H2O --> C6H12O6 + O2

2H2 + O2 --> 2H20

A + BX --> B + AX

2H2O --> 2H2 + O2

CH4 + O2 --> H2O + CO2

N2 + H2 --> NH3

2Ca + O2 --> 2Cao
