Energy Resources

Objectives!

?

- Be able to realize the pros and cons of energy resources.

- Understanding the situation of energy resources.

Introduction

We Depend Heavily on Oil

Oil's refined products are used to manufacture almost all chemical products, such as plastics, fertilisers, detergents, paints and even medicines, plus a whole host of other products that you might not expect.

We Depend Heavily on Oil

Crude Oil/Petroleum

-from a well cannot be used

as is, it is transported to a refinery by pipeline, truck, rail, or oil tanker shipments.

It is heated in pressurized vessels to seperate it into various fuels and other components called "refining".

Crude Oil

Crude Oil/Petroleum

-is a fossil fuel that was formed over millions of years through the transformation of dead organisms, such as algae, plants, and bacteria, that experienced high heat and pressure when trapped inside rock formations.

Crude Oil

Is the world running out of crude oil?

Crude

Oil

Earth's energy resources are more than adequate to meet demand until 2030 and well beyond' and 'the world is not running out of oil just yet. Most estimates of proven oil reserves are high enough to meet the cumulative world demand we project over the next three decades'

Disadvantages and Advantages of Crude Oil

Natural Gas

also called methane gas or natural methane gas, colourless highly flammable gaseous hydrocarbon consisting primarily of methane and ethane.

Natural

Gas

Natural Gas

While natural gas is composed of mainly methane (which is made from a majority of hydrogen), gasoline is composed of carbon compounds. Both come from inside the earth, but methane is found in natural reserves while carbon compounds come from crude oil.

How is Natural Gas extracted?

Natural gas is extracted from subsurface rock formations via drilling. Advances in hydraulic fracturing technologies have enabled access to large volumes of natural gas from shale.

What is shale gas made of?

This natural gas is a mixture of naturally occurring hydrocarbon gases produced from the decomposition of organic matter (plant and animal remains). Typically, shale gas consists of 70 to 90 per cent methane (CH4), the main hydrocarbon target for exploration companies.

Advantages and Disadvatages of Natural Gas.
