Is Bangladesh an overpopulated country?
Population
According to the case study information on Bangledesh, the country has a population of 163 million (compared to 66 million in UK), but according to Worldometer today, they are at 173.... and are having a net birth approx. 10 seconds (They add 3 million a year to their pop.). TBQ states that Bangladesh is an overpopulated country, and on Worldometer it proves that this is true because although it is not as bad as other countries, it is coming 8th in the world for having 1,329 people in kilometer sqaured (in Dhaka alone, it has 43,000 people per kilometer squared. To put it in context, 3 times your average golf course, 1,329 people live in that, all around you. 90% of the pop. are muslims.
Bangladesh is situated in the South of Asia and it has two rivers spearating it from neighbouring countries. It is a hilly and plain region. Although the land area is 130,100km squared, it is still congested majorly and this is looking to increase. In Dhaka, then main city in Bangladesh, the roads are terrible and traffic is plentiful.
In Bangledesh, the average birth rate is standing at 1.9 according to Worldometer and it has been steadily declining due to women finding sources of employment due to urbanisation, economic status and a family plan.
According to statistics, in 2022, 5.3 out of 1000 people die in Bangladesh, but this is a huge decrease from 17 out of 1000 in 1973.
Life expectancy is starting to increase for Bangladesh as child immunization is increasing and medical improvements like ORT. The age for a male is 70 years old, and for a female 73.
Migration
The net migration rate is negative at -1.57 (Immigration-Emmigration) - judging by this result, there are more emmigrants rather than immirants. There are estimated more emmigrants leaving because of the severe weather issues over there. Overall, Bangladesh is a growing country that will keep getting immigrants and emmigrants.
Bangladesh is a destination country for hundreds of thousands of refugees coming from the neighbouring Myanmar, and has a very high urban population density. Immigration to Bangladesh affects more than 2 million foreigners.
Rohingya people have suffered violence because of their religion and ethnicity and they have decided to move into Southeast Asia, where in Bangladesh they have set up 2 refugee camps for these people. Hundrads of thousands of people have fled and come into places; Malaysia, Phillipines, Indonesia +.
Many Bangladeshian people leave their homes because environmental factors have changed and they can no longer earn a living. Coastal flooding is occurring more frequently, destroying crops and rice fields that sustain villagers as saline water pushes further inland.
People emmigrate from Bangledesh because families think ecomical, and realise that Bangledesh is not a great start for their children, and when contemplating this they realise it could beome greater if they relocate.
Economical
Economically, Bangladesh is struggling because of the natural disasters that it faces and the movement of poeple either migrating internally, or outside and how such land is being lost.
The regular threat of cyclones and flooding makes this problem much worse but 80% of the country is situated on the floodplaines of the Ganges, Brahmaputra, Meghna and most of the country is close to sea level and about 40% is regularly flooded during the monsoon season. This is terrible for farmers and agricultural businesses as their crops are destryoed by these natural disasters and over 8000 hectares (15,000 football fields) of cultivable land are lost every year due to urbanisation, industrialisation and the expansion of infastructure. Every year during the summer nearly 1/3 of Bangladesh is flooded. The average annual rainfall is 57-117 inches and 80% of the rainfall is in summer. Because of these natural disasters that can wipe out human beings, so they move to urban areas that are safer meaning the population density will rise, or migration rates will rise. This land is potential food production that Bangladesh can ill afford to lose
The Bangladeshi currency is taka, one taka is worth 0.0074 pound sterling.
Bangladesh GDP per capita is $2.457 which is surprisingly higher than India's and it is considered one of the 34 major economies. Inflation in Bangladesh was at 7.7% which is actually lower than the UK
Bangladesh could improve:
Industry
Bangladeshis are mostly employed in the agriculture sector with rice as the single-most-important product.
Bangladesh is also largely known for its textile industry and cloth production, battery production, ship building and more. Bangladesh is one of the three largest textile industries in the world.
But Agricultural sector is still the largest employer in Bangladesh.
Cloth factory
Battery production
Employment in Bangladesh is very low, because of the extremely high population pressure and the deprivation of rural and urban areas. 4/5s of the population live in rural areas, which results in most families having to survive on extremely small plots of land. Not enough work is available for this many people, and about 40% of the population is underemployed working a limited number of hours a week at low waes. Underemployment doesn't just affect countryside, it affects urban areas too!
Social
Problems
Bangladesh is an overpopulated country which means that they have more people that its resources can support.
Poverty is another problem in Bangladesh as there is such a fast growing population rate and there is not enough resources for everyone.
Crime
In Bangladesh, because there is such social and political unsustainability which means that people get more involved with drug business, violence, terrorism, kidnapping, murder and much more.
The education system in Bangladesh suffers from a huge lack of funding and ineffective planning, management and monitoring. This means that the standard of teaching education is not up to standard. The state pledges for only 8 years of school, and many people have no knowledge especially when they are in rural areas, and when they are needed for other things. To sum up, they either have no education or poor education.
Living Conditions
Three out of four slum households live in one rooms and then often lack any access to clean water, safe sanitation and waste management. The people that live in these slums are constantly facing threats of illness, disease and a lack off access to basic daily needs. Many people don't have basic amenities such as electricity and clean drinking water, it goes to show how much we take for granted. In urban cities like Dhaka, a contiuous state of deteriation is frequent.
Summary
To conclude Bangladesh is a poor country with little that they can do to stop natural disasters, poor in education, healthcare, sanity and just to live! Crime is abundant and frequent and the industry is small trying to do what it can for its country. It has a large population and the population density is even bigger. Generally speaking Bangladesh is an over-populated, migrant abundant, but it isn't all helpless because it has got its industry doing its best that it can do.
