1764: Sugar Act

It was passed on April 5, 1764

The sugar act taxed foreign sugar and increased taxes on coffee, indigo, and some wines.

The colonists were not happy with the act, and many reacted by rioting

The British government repealed the sugar act in 1765 as a reaction to the anger of the colonists

1764: The Currency Act

Was passed on September 1, 1764

The act restricted and regulated the colony's banking and currency

The colonists were once again very unhappy with the act and rioted in retaliation

1765: The Stamp Act

Was passed on March 22, 1765

This act required colonists to pay a tax on every printed

The colonists were very angry and refused to pay the tax

After months of protesting from the colonists, the british government repealed the stamp act in 1766

1767: The Townshend Act

Was passed on June 29, 1767

The act imposed duties on imports of glass, lead, some paints, paper, and tea.

The colonists protested, boycotted goods, and often used the phrase “no taxation without representation”

The british government sent military officials to Boston to inforce the acts

1773: The Tea Act

Was passed on April 27, 1773

This act allowed tea to be delivered straight to the colonies without landing in England first

The colonists were not happy about this act and they boycotted tea. This act lead to the Boston tea party.

The act and the boston tea party resulted in the British government closing the boston harbor and enacting the intolerable acts
