The Age of Discovery

Event #1

  • The Age of Discovery is when Europe decided to explore more of the world and venture out into the oceans in search of luxury goods.
  • The Age of Discovery allowed Europeans to map out the coast of West Africa, find spices and gold, and become a wealthy area.
  • Trade routes were also found to make it easier for Europe to trade goods from Asia and Africa, making Europe the dominant sea trade empire.
  • New Continents/Land were found for more resources and luxury goods to be taken back to Europe. The Americas being found and being names "The New World"
  • Conquest was also common during this time and Europe began colonizing areas in Africa and in the Americas.

Christopher Columbus

The Columbian Exchange

  • With Columbus finding "The New World" came the genocide with the native Americans as he tried to forcefully convert them.
  • The exchange was known for the distribution of plants, new animal species never seen by the Europeans, and new bacteria and viruses.
  • Columbus had gained a trade empire from being the first to exchange from the western hemisphere to the eastern one.
  • Columbus had also taken four different voyages to the Americas and each one being in a new area.
  • Columbus also assumed that "The New World" was Asia which was disproven after his first visit back to Europe.
  • Due to the diseases that Columbus had brought and the military force, the native people as much as 90% of them had died. This is known as the Great Dying.

Scientific Revolution

  • The Scientific Revolution was the start of scholars questioning the ancient authors
  • Scholars began to study astronomy more as ancient astronomers assumptions had no merit to them
  • There were small improvements within the medicine field as well but it did not progress as much as Astronomy had
  • Mathematics had also been improved upon as Isaac Newton was a key figure during this time period
  • The scientific method also being founded allowed for more hypothesis' to have merit as there were actual experiments to help back up the hypotheses

Event #2

Improvements to Astronomy

Astronomy

  • Geocentrism was a popular theory before the scientific revolution. However, astronomers who observed the stars and planets noticed that the paths did not have a circular orbit.
  • A new theory called heliocentrism was formed as some people believed that the sun was at the center of the orbits rather than the earth.
  • Galileo had also discovered that the moon and sun were not smooth and Jupiter had its own moons
  • Galileo had also provided theories of inertia and gravity. Proving inertia and bringing math equations with it.

Who is Isaac Newton

Isaac Newton

  • Isaac Newton was a genius who was a Mathematician and an astronomer
  • Newton was also an inventor. He had created the modern telescope as he used mirrors instead of lenses.
  • Newton had also proposed the theory of light and color. He had discovered that sunlight is a rainbow of colors that can not be separated but instead recombined into whiteness. The iconic Dark side of The Moon album cover by Pink Floyd is Newton's theory.
  • Newton was also the creator of calculus which helped with high level geometry
  • One of his most influential discoveries were laws of motion. Newton's laws helped with the understanding of why objects are not in continuous motion.
  • His most important discovery was the law of gravity. This helped push astronomers into understanding how the solar system works and how the planets are orbiting the sun.

The Industrial Revolution

Event #3

  • The industrial revolution was filled with different inventions. Each invention being improved upon to this day or staying the same and being used.
  • The revolution also led to urbanization throughout the world and made living conditions horrible.
  • Transportation was also improved upon with railroads and the steam engine being invented.
  • The horrible living conditions were caused by the factories that were built during this time. As the pollution was rising and causing deaths throughout the world. From humans to wild life most living things were affected by the growing pollution.
  • Working conditions were also horrendous at the time as people were working almost full days for a dollar or two. Even children were sent off to work in the factories.

Industrial Revolution Pt. 2

  • Some inventions that helped increase production rate for farmers also led to an increase in slave labor.
  • The inventions made had also made life easier for people. The telegragh being created allowed for long distance communication to become quicker and faster.
  • The economy was good for the consumers during this time as well, since more goods were being made at a faster rate.
  • The gender roles in the family was also slowly changing as a man had to rely on his wife for money as well to survive.
  • Families were also able to travel for fun and have vacations more often. Making the families more connected.
  • Food was also able to travel far distances making some food from different areas of the world easy to obtain for the average person
