The history of Australia

- 50.000 years ago : Aborigines immigrated to Australia

from Indonesia

- 1616: Dutch explorers named the new land

(Tasmania) = New Holland

- 1770: James Cook found east coast

- Called it New South Wales

- Claimed it for Britain

- The British decided to use the land as a prison colony

- Needed a place to send its convicts

- 1788: the First Fleet (11 ships) carrying 1500

people to Sydney Harbour

- 1788-1868: about 160.000 convicts were brought to Australia

The history of Australia

- 1790s: Free immigrants arrived

territories (often armed)

- 1851: Gold was discovered in New South Wales

and Victoria

Eureka Rebellion

the government miners' licences

- Simple way for the government to tax the diggers

- No representation in the government (no right to vote)

- Leader: Peter Lalor

- They were attacked of the Regiment of the

British Army and policy groups

- The 'diggers' lost the battle

- A bill was passed : the right to vote and stand for

parliament to any digger who owned a miner’s licence

- Historians regard this as the beginning of the Australian democracy
