The history of Australia
- 50.000 years ago : Aborigines immigrated to Australia
from Indonesia
- 1616: Dutch explorers named the new land
(Tasmania) = New Holland
- 1770: James Cook found east coast
- Called it New South Wales
- Claimed it for Britain
- The British decided to use the land as a prison colony
- Needed a place to send its convicts
- 1788: the First Fleet (11 ships) carrying 1500
people to Sydney Harbour
- 1788-1868: about 160.000 convicts were brought to Australia
- 1790s: Free immigrants arrived
- Cheap land and many jobs ->
more migrants from Britain
- Began to move deeper into Aboriginal
territories (often armed)
- 1851: Gold was discovered in New South Wales
and Victoria
- Thousands of hopefuls came from other states
- Population grew across south east Australia
- Wealth and growing industry
- 1854: Goldfield workers ('diggers') opposed
the government miners' licences
- Simple way for the government to tax the diggers
- No representation in the government (no right to vote)
- Leader: Peter Lalor
- They were attacked of the Regiment of the
British Army and policy groups
- The 'diggers' lost the battle
- A bill was passed : the right to vote and stand for
parliament to any digger who owned a miner’s licence
- Historians regard this as the beginning of the Australian democracy
- Parliamentary constitutional monarchy
- The Commonwealth realm/of Nations =
A souvereign state, shares the same person as its head of state
- United Kingdom of Great Britain, Northern Ireland
and its former colonies

- Lived as hunters and collectors in little clans
- They have a spiritual connection with nature
- 1788: Wave of European epidemic diseases (e.g.
influenza and measles)
- Declining birth rate due to rape
- Violent conflicts between settlers and the Aborigines
- Cattle- and sheep herds (from farmers) took their water away
- Were hunted by the Europeans and pushed in reserves
- Aboriginal-children had been taken away from their families
- Adoptive children in Australian families raised after
"white values and morals" (= Stolen Generations)
1788-1920: from 1 mio. to 60.000 Aborigines

- They slept and dreamed of the adventures of the following day
- Turned their dreams into reality
- They created all the elements of nature,

- There are many issues facing Aborigines these days:
- Poverty and low income
- Poor education
- Poor access to medical assistance
- Drugs and alcohol problems
- Racial discrimination and
cultural differences
Major problems:
- Aboriginals live around 17 years less than non-
indigenous Australians
- Crime in communities :
- Aboriginals are 11 times more likely to be
in prison than non-indigenous Australians
- Most students leave school early
- 39% of students stayed on to year 12
at high school
- Compared with 75% of non- indigenous Australians
- Poor education -> low income -> a lower standard of life
- Since the ''Bringing Them Home'' report in 1997
- Celebrated every year on 26 May
- Apology to the Stolen Generations
- Brings closer the indigenous and non-indigenous
- Aborigines can be treated equal
- Gives people the chance to write messages
and sign “sorry books” showing
their compassion
