Who started the order ?

St. Katharine Drexel started the order of the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament in 1891. She started a house because for her whole life, her father and stepmother opened their house to the poor so when she saw the situation of the Native Americans and how poor they were so she wanted to help them. The purpose was to honor and serve Our Lord in the Eucharist and the elevation of the Divinity of Jesus Christ to Native Americans and Black Americans through apostolate of prayer and work.

What was their mission?

The Mission of the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament:

Guided by the spirit of Katharine Drexel,

we are called to share the Gospel message with the poor, especially among the Black and Native American peoples, and to challenge all forms of racism as well as the other deeply rooted injustices in the world today.

In everything they did and still do, in the schools, hospitals and mission that they founded, these women promoted the gospel of Christ. As it says on the Sisters of Blessed Sacrament website, “In February 1891, St. Katharine Drexel, listening to desires God placed in her heart, professed vows of poverty, chastity and obedience, and became the first Sister of the Blessed Sacrament. Today, we continue to vow ourselves to God through our congregation in a free and total gift of self. We remain faithful to the mission Christ has entrusted to us – to prayer and service among the Black and Native American people.”

Whose teachings did they follow?

Yes...

Were any members of the group granted sainthood?

The founder of the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament St. Katharine Drexel was canonized saint on October 1, 2000 by Pope John Paul II in Saint Peter’s Square, Vatican City. Katharine was remembered for her love of the Eucharist and a desire for unity of all peoples. She was courageous and took the initiative to address social inequality within minorities. She believed all should have access to a quality education and her selfless service, including the donation of her inheritance, helped many reach that goal.

If you had a religious calling, would you consider entering this order?

Why or why not?

As a group we have decided that if we were in the position of having a religious calling and it was meant to be we would choose to take part in that calling. The sisters of the blessed sacrament teach others the fundamentals of being kind to other people. The sisters are against being discriminated by their race. So if we had a religious calling we would definitely follow it. The sisters of the blessed sacrament believe God calls them “to be a sign in the world of the power of the Eucharistic Christ to effect unity and community among all peoples.” This strong message proves that when people come together, great things can happen.

This cloak and bonnet attire is the traditional dress of The Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament. Nowadays sisters don't wear the traditional uniform. This sister said “I only wear the habit to Mass or for special occasions.” and that “These days I often wear jeans and a tee, pullover, or sweatshirt.”

What was their original religious attire? How has it changed?
