Spider Crab and Algae
Presentation by April McLane
What is Co-Evolution
Co-evolution is:
- Evolution in a mutually dependent matter
- Species interact so closely that they share evolutionary changes over time
Co-Evolution
pt.1
Spider crabs grab onto algae to move
pt 2
The head of the crab is c0vered in hairs and spines that get covered in matted algae
pt 3
The crabs use the algae to catch prey
Spider Crabs
They use the algae to camouflage since they move slowly
The spider crab has a hard shell that can't change colors which causes the need for camouflage
Eats slow moving, dead organisms
Spider crabs pt 2
The spider crab lives in coral reefs with the algae
The spider crab provides a habitat for the algae
The spider crab eats some of the organisms that eat the algae
Protection from predators
Spider crab protects algae from being eaten and the algae camouflages the spider crab
