4.LS2.1: Support an argument with evidence that plants get the materials they need for growth and reproduction chiefly through a process in which they use carbon dioxide from the
air, water, and energy from the sun to produce sugars, plant
materials, and waste (oxygen); and that this process is called photosynthesis.
Photosynthesis:
- The process of plants making their own food
- Sunlight + Carbon + Water = Sugar + Oxygen
What it is
For photosynthesis to occur, a plant will need:
- Sunlight
- Carbon Dioxide
- Water
So that it can produce:

- Sugar
- Oxygen
Photosynthesis in 5 steps:
The Process
- Water (and minerals) are absorbed through the plant's roots
- Sunlight enters the plant through its pigment, called chlorophyll
- Carbon dioxide is absorbed through its pores, called the stomata
- The plant uses these tools to create the energy they need to survive, resulting in glucose and oxygen
- Oxygen leaves the plant
