Photosynthesis: How Plants Make Food

Ms. Jones

Fourth Grade Science

Standards

4.LS2.1: Support an argument with evidence that plants get the materials they need for growth and reproduction chiefly through a process in which they use carbon dioxide from the

air, water, and energy from the sun to produce sugars, plant

materials, and waste (oxygen); and that this process is called photosynthesis.

Photosynthesis:

  • The process of plants making their own food
  • Sunlight + Carbon + Water = Sugar + Oxygen

What it is

For photosynthesis to occur, a plant will need:

  • Sunlight
  • Carbon Dioxide
  • Water

So that it can produce:

What a Plant Needs

  • Sugar
  • Oxygen

Photosynthesis in 5 steps:

The Process

  • Water (and minerals) are absorbed through the plant's roots
  • Sunlight enters the plant through its pigment, called chlorophyll
  • Carbon dioxide is absorbed through its pores, called the stomata
  • The plant uses these tools to create the energy they need to survive, resulting in glucose and oxygen
  • Oxygen leaves the plant

The importance of

photosynthesis

Plants recieve carbon dioxide, which other living organisms cannot breathe in

Plants then put oxygen back out into the world, providing us with clean air to breathe

Why it Matters
