Stages of play!

The 6 stages of play!

The six stages of play were created by sociologist Mildred Partnen.

Parten studied play and her study suggested that when children engaged in active playtime, they learned how to interact with other children, cooperate, share and make friends.

Parten stated that children’s play changed as they developed, going through six distinct stages that generally, but not always, linked to children’s ages:

The Stages:

Unoccupied play.

Solitary play.

Onlooker Play.

Parallel Play.

Associative Play.

Cooperative Play.

Matching activity!

On your tables, match the different stages of play to the correct age.

Case Study.

We are going to go through Toby's journey through the stages of play.

Toby is now 9 years old, he loves to play with his friends and he is progressing well at school in all areas of his learning and has a great skill set.

Aged: 2 years old.

During this stage of play, Toby often plays alone, with toys different from others, and he is uninterested or unaware of what others around him are doing.

This stage of play is most commonly seen in young toddlers between the ages of 2 and 3.

Why is this type of play common at a young age?

Why is this stage of play important?

Toby is now 3 and half.

What stage of play is he now at?

Parallel play:

In this stage, Toby plays side-by-side with other children, but there is a lack of group involvement.

Toby typically plays with similar toys and often copies other children.

At this stage, Toby is more interested in playing with other children around him than the toys they are playing with.

He often plays and trades the same toys or actively talks and engages with other children, but no rules of play are set.

This is an important stage of play because it develops important skills such as cooperation, problem solving, and language development.

What stage of play is this?
