The Guru Dakshina of Lord Krishna
Krishna had to bring the son back because it was the part of doing the Guru Dakshina. The Guru Dakshina is very important because the Guru first teaches us then he/she has to get a thing that the guru wants, so here, Sāndīpani Muni is asking Krishna to get back his dead son.
Narakāsura was the son of Dharitrī. He had been killed by Krishna because he tried to grasp the sky. His mother(Dharitrī) prayed to Krishna and Narakāsura returned. Krishna also entered his kingdom.

Kalayavana was the king of Magadha and Salva. He dicided to attack Mathura , but, the city was encircled by Kalayavana's soldiers. The Lord still had not killed Kalayavana's soldiers because he wanted to show the power of his own soldiers. He did not kill them personally by himself killing the soldeirs.
Krishna did not fight with the soldiers because he wanted to show his own soldier's powers. He only let his soldiers fight so people know how powerful is his army.
