Getting Fired / Laid Off

Spring 2020 session

Fired or Laid Off?

What's The Difference?

FIRED - Getting fired is being terminated for reasons generally under your control, such as misconduct, unsatisfactory performance, taking too much time off, or failing to comply with company policies.

LAID OFF - Getting laid off is when the employer ends your employment for reasons that are beyond your control, such as restructuring, downsizing, not enough work/money.

Rehire?

When employees get fired, there typically is little prospect for them to be re-hired in the future.

When employees get laid off, it typically happens for economic reasons and they can be re-hired when the situation improves.

Unemployment?

Fired employees don't typically receive the right to unemployment because the reason they lost their job is related to their performance.

Laid off employees, on the other hand, may be eligible for unemployment because their employment ends for economic reasons and not by their fault.

There are 5 things to do if you've been fired...

What To Do Next

1) Stay present and manage your emotions

2) Keep your dignity

3) Get your stories straight

4) Ask if you’re allowed to apply for other positions internally

5) Take care of you

Don't Do This

It's natural to feel angry, sad, and frustrated; just make sure to restrict negative comments and complaints to your closest friends and family.

Don't Forget

Don't miss the opportunity to ask for the basis of your employer's decision.
