THE COKE TIMELINE

By Chenxi Shi. Claudia Núñez and Jorge Ferrer.

1886 - Coke's invention

Coke was created by John Pemberton, an Atlanta pharmacist. One afternoon, he shook a caramel-colored liquid aroma (from a still secret recipe), coca leaves and cola nuts. When it was done, he went to nearby Jacobs' Pharmacy, where he worked.

There the mixture was combined with carbonated water and offered to customers, who agreed that the new drink was something special. So Jacobs' Pharmacy put it up for sale for five cents a glass.

1890-1900 - Coke's advertisements

1890-1900

During these two decades, Coke made a huge impact and it was confirmed that the drink was being drunk and sold in every state and territory of the United States. In 1898 the first building dedicated exclusively to The Coca-Cola Company was built. The company grew so fast that it changed offices five times in the following 12 years.

In 1904, Coke advertising appeared for the first time in national magazines in the United States, where the singer Hilda Clark appeared in said advertisements, who became the first celebrity to appear in multiple Coke advertising formats, including trays , posters and even bookmarks.

1910 - Coke's expansion

Bottling plants were opened in Canada, Cuba, and Panama, becoming the first three countries to bottle Coke outside of the United States. Over the next few years, bottling plants were opened in the Philippines, Paris, and Bordeaux.

The advertising budget exceeded $100,000 for the first time.

The first Coke sales convention was held in Atlanta.

Coke's first magazines advertising appeared in 1904 in national magazines in the United States. They began to sponsor some celebrities, and their popularity was growing each year...

1931 - Coke's Santa

1931

The company started its Christmas ads in 1920 with the goal of increasing sales during the winter months, using different images of Father Christmas, even though none were very popular until 1931. That year, an advertising executive who worked for The Coca-Cola Company, hired an illustrator to paint a Father Christmas that was halfway between the symbolic and the real, that is, between a representation of Coke and the real Father Christmas.

So the illustrator was inspired by a poem and by Scandinavia to create an endearing, warm and friendly character. The mixture was an ordinary Father Christmas, but with the Coke's symbolic red, fat and always with one of these drinks in hand. From there, Father Christmas became red worldwide.

1916 - The Coca-Cola Company's drinks

1961

Things went so well with Coke that the company decided to bring out with a new drink. The new lemon-lime drink was named Sprite, referring to the famous elf created by artist Haddon Sundblom called Sprite Boy, who appeared in Coke commercials during that time. The same happened with Tab, the first sugar-free soft drink launched in 1961. However, the drink was not as successful as others and was phased out in 2019.

2000-2010 - Coke progress

2000-2010

In 2001, Simply Orange was created, in addition to vanilla and orange Coke, which is added to others such as cherry, raspberry, lemon, ginger or lime. In 2002, The Coca-Cola Company sponsored the World Cup in Japan and South Korea, as well as advertising at chimes. In 2005, Coke Zero arrived, which made many more people buy it to continue enjoying its flavor and being healthier. To become even more popular, they sponsored the Beijing Olympic Games and they were not satisfied with that either, but the first Coke page on Facebook was created and in 2008 Coke had more than 500 million Chinese consumers.
