The Cell Theroy

Presented by Katie Jeremay for 1st period biology

Tecnology

Compound light microscope

  • utilizes a series of glass lenses and visable lights to magnify an image
  • origanial copy was invented by Zacharias Jansen in the 1590's and then from there people improved it

The CellMist System (the skin gun)

  • harvests a patient's stem cells from a small area of unwounded skin (usually one square inch) and puts them in a water-based solution
  • SkinGun sprays the solution onto the wound, where new skin begins to grow at the cellular level
  • this product is still experimental but has great possibliity and future

Scientists

Robert Hooke

  • used the light microscobe to view dead cells in a cork (1655)
  • best known for his law of elasticity (Hooke's law), his book Micrographa and for first applying the word "cell"

Anton Van Leeuwenhoek

  • observed living cells (1673) and called them "animalcules" (now they are called microorganisms)
  • worked with the compound microscope
  • first to record and observe muscle fibres, bacteria, and blood flow in small blood vessels

Picture

Matthias Schleiden

  • came up with what we know today as the cell theroy
  • concluded that all plant tissues are composed of cells and that an embryonic plant arose from a single cell
  • He declared that the cell is the basic building block of all plant matter. (1838)

Picture

Theodor Schwann

  • determined that all animals are made up of cells, ending the therory that plants and animals were made up of different things (1839)
  • While studying animal cells, he discovered pepsin, the digestive enzyme, the stomach epithelium, and membrane tissues of animals.

Picture

Rudolf Virchow

  • worked with diseased tissue and determined that cells come from cells (1855)
  • first to conclude that the cell thory can work for diseased and healthy tissue

Scientist part 2

Francesco Redi

  • disproved the hypothises of the spontanous generation* of flies on meat (1668)
  • proved that life comes from life

* means that life can come from non-living things

Picture

Louis Pasteur

Pasteurized wine, milk, disproved spontaneous generation of microbes*, discovered several bacterial pathogens** (1861)

*a microorganism

**a bacterium, virus, or other microorganism that can cause disease.
