Religious and Cultural Symbols

Introduction

Introduction

Symbols are essential to everyday life because they give people a tangible, meaningful, and visual picture of something specific that has its own meaning or purpose. For example, religious symbols would include a Cross, Dove, and Sacred Heart. Cultural symbols would include the American Flag, Statue of Liberty, and the White House.

The Cross

The Cross is one of the most important symbols of the Christian faith. Jesus’s crucifixion and death for the sake of all of humanity is recalled by the Cross, and the Cross is symbolic of Christianity and Jesus himself. While the Cross now serves as a major religious symbol of Christianity, it hasn’t always been such a peaceful and spiritual image. Crucifixion was a significant form of capital punishment used by groups like the Romans and Persians. Instead of focusing on the Cross's gruesome original purpose, we use the Cross as a sign of our faith, symbolizing Jesus’s heroic deeds and sacrifices as God’s son.

Bible passage: Luke 23: 33

Sacred Heart

Is one of the most widely practiced and well-known Roman Catholic devotions, taking the heart of the resurrected body as the representation of the love by Jesus Christ, which is "his heart, pierced on the Cross."
