CEPI's Conception
Lessons learned from the Ebola crisis...
History
- 2003: the Ebola vaccine was created
- 2014: Peak of Ebola outbreak, 7 potential vaccines created
- 2015: Ebola vaccines are tested (during the middle of the epidemic)
- 2016: the Ebola crisis = both troubling and triumphant times
- 2017: CEPI officially launched in January of 2017
WHY
- CEPI was created as a vaccine development fund to ready pandemic defenses during “peacetime”
- CEPI currently focuses on 3 EID (epidemic infectious disease) these are: MERS, Lassa, Nipah
WHY
CEPI vs. Ad Hoc Partnerships
CEPI vs. Ad Hoc Partnerships
Past Ad-Hoc Partnerships were insufficient because:
- The pipeline for epidemic infectious disease vaccines (EID) vaccines is weak
- Administrative delays during clinical testing
- Ad-hoc initiatives by nature are fragmented
- Unilateral efforts by governments to prepare for EIDs are inefficient and unsustainable
- No concerted effort to look at EIDs through a global health security lens
