Rice originated from China, more specifically from a small basin in the Yangtze river. This is also where ample supplies and water are available.
Where did rice originate
During the Colombian exchange, Europeans brought rice to the Americas by ship, in order to grow crops once they made it to the new world. Slaves brought rice over as well so that they could grow it.
Where did rice spread during the Colombian Exchange?
Rice cultivation and slavery, at this time, was working hand in hand. The more crops that needed to be grown, the more labor they had to use. Native slaves would often be made to clear out forests to grow rice crops.

Latin American societies adopted brown rice as a cultural food later on, and is still used as a cultural dish to this day.
