The Chinese custom of setting off fireworks in celebration of special occasions was readily adopted by Jamaicans, who especially favour the activity at Christmas. The traditional Chinese Lion and Dragon dances have been incorporated into Jamaica’s yearly National Festival in a notable display

of cultural adaptation and integration.

The Indians have a major festival called Hussay also known as Indian carnival. This is perhaps most well known in Vere, Clarendon where it is celebrated each August. Hindu festivals such as Diwali was celebrated although many became Christians over time.

The Saree/Sari is a long unstitched piece of cloth varying in length from 4.5 to 8 meters draped across the body and paired with a blouse/skirt. It is worn to festival or on fashion shows in Jamaica.

Cheongsam is a traditional body dress that has been adopted by Jamaicans and worn with chopsticks in the hair.

Jamaican Chinese have impacted the evolution of reggae music from the 1960s, Vincent “Randy” Chin, through his label 'VP Records' helped to launch the careers of many artistes. Former Soca artiste Bryon Lee had a popular band in Jamaica. Likewise, Tessanne Chin, reggae artiste and winner of The Voice brought fame to Jamaica in 2013.

These are traditional Indian instruments used in creating music. Some are still being made in Bull Bay, St Thomas, Jamaica today.

Some of the dances that the Chinese contributed to Jamaica are the Dragon & Lion Dance. The Dragon Dance is mostly celebrated on the New Year’s Day and New Year’s Eve.

One of the dances that the Indians contributed is the Belly Dance. It is still done and even used for exercise.

Traditional Indian foods such as curry , eggplant, bitter gourd, okra, roti, dal, pilaf (cook-up rice) and chutney have become part of the national cuisine. Indians were the first group to grow rice in Jamaica, establishing the island's first successful rice mill in the 1890s.

The main gift of the Chinese to Jamaican cooking is soy sauce. There is hardly a Jamaican meat dish that is now prepared without soy sauce, both for color and taste. There is oyster sauce, as well as sesame oil. Sweet-and-sour sauce was also introduced and quickly became a Jamaican favourite. Noodles, too are a favourite here!

The Chinese are owners of grocery and variety stores, restaurants, laundromats, wholesale merchandising, and even music production. Bamboo Gardens Restaurant, Island Grill and NCB are some Chinese owned businesses in Jamaica. The immigrants also brought gambling with them and introduced games like Lotto and Cash Pot.

China is the world's leading manufacturer of chemicals fertilizers, cement, and steel. They brought these to Jamaica when they were coming, just like their ancestors to create stores (shops).

The Indians contribute to the Jamaican economy by manufacturing and selling leather goods, jewellery, electronic items etc. They are also restaurant owners and shop keepers who employ many Jamaicans. Treasure Box is a well known Indian business here in Mandeville.
