Religion

  • All of the Inuits believed in animism.
  • Dance to the spirits to please them.
  • Would wear animal masks when they communicated with the spirits.
  • After they killed an animal they would open their skull to release the spirits.

  • Most of the Inuits believed in Christianity.
  • The Moravian Missionaries converted the Inuits to Christianity.
  • They would not wear masks when the worshiped the Christian G0d.
  • Most of the Inuits stop believing in the spirit world, so they stop doing all of the ways the worshiped the spirits.

  • The men of the Inuit tribe would hunt and fish to provide for the tribe.
  • Most of the men had to know how to cook and sew, because they were away for several days due to hunting sometimes.
  • Then each family would live and hunt together with 6-10 other families
  • They usually lived in family groups of around 5-6 people.

  • After colinization happened then the Inuit people lost a lot of their resources and land.
  • The Englishmen that colinized the Inuit lands took over the Inuit hunting and fishing lands.

  • They used whatever material they could find to use for art.
  • They used animal parts, stone, driftwood.
  • The main instrument for the inuit ceremonies was the one sided drum.
  • In song and dance they told stories about the spirits.
  • Most drums made from caribou or walrus stomach or bladder, stretched over a wooden hoop.

  • Sculptures-typically carved from variety of materials.

  • Block printing-Usually printed on stone.

-Many of the weapons were made of ivory, stone, animal bone.

-Can be used to cut hair, skinning the animal, cleaning the animal, and hunting.

-Uses Caribou antlers and Walrus ivory.

- Inuit special knife was called an ulu, which was used for the basic functions of the inuit blade

- Most common knife was carved out of bone.

  • The hatchet had a steel head and was used for trade.
  • The hatchet was heavier and more efficient than normal axes.
  • The blades were made from recycled materials used such as saw blades.
  • All hatchets have wooden handles.
  • The blades from hatchets would have been traded, but the handles were made from trees of the Inuits.
