- DEVASTATE the agricultural south
- Abraham Lincoln was elected president
- Supported the north, for the most part
- Didn't want slavery
- Was going to abolish slavery
The South's Response
South
- Separation
- As the government was telling them to stop having slaves
- They wanted to keep their slaves
- They didn't agree with the north in general
- If they created their own government, then. . .
- They could keep slavery
- They could make their own rules based on their views and beliefs
- They could keep their ways and not be forced into industrialization and the northern ways
The North's Counter Response
North
- WAR!
- Felt it was their duty to preserve the union
- Otherwise it would be 'betraying' their government and founding fathers
- The south would have continued their ways of slavery
- The south still wouldn't be industrialized
- Declaring war and winning the war would force the south to stay apart of the union
- And so they did

Q: should the South be allowed to split away from the North?
A: Figure it out!
A Question
DEBATE
Now we are going to split off into two groups, where you will argue about the topic question.
We have already distributed the roles amongst you, so you may now look at your cards and see what your role is.
Go get with your groups (North on the window side of the room, South on the other). You have the rest of class to discuss your arguments and reasoning with your team, and tomorrow we will actually have the debate.
(NOTE: because of controversy, keep the discussion off of slavery as much as possible, as to not offend people.)
