The colonists fought the Revolutionary War for freedom from Britain and its rule while Britain fought the Revolutionary War to keep control of the 13 Colonies. Throughout this war, both sides used different weapons and the weapons had different uses.
The British primarily used muskets, rifles, cannons, bayonets, and pistols throughout the war.
This was the most important weapon in the Revolutionary War and it was a design that the British made. The musket had a long gun with a bayonet attached at the end of it. Muskets couldn't aim very accurately at a distance. Soldiers shot using muskets because it released massive amounts of lead, leading to confusion and panic in the enemy side. This led the British to be able to attack the Americans using the bayonet and kill a lot of Americans.
Only 1,000 of these rifles were made and they were used to combat the American sharp shooter. In various ways, it was opposed to the American long rifle. Its accuracy was 300 yards.
Cannons fired solid shells, exploding shells, and grapeshots. They were a little mobile if they were on wheels. Cannons helped destroy a fort or a large structures. Sometimes, cannons were fired at enemy troops so that it stops the Americans from charging at the British and causing damage to their troops.
These were used for one-on-one combat. It is located on the end of a musket and is used when the Britsh wanted to end the battle after firing a couple of shots of musket balls into the enemy side. It made the Americans either surrender or retreat from the battleground and helped secure British victory.
These weapons were used for people on horses (also known as the cavalry). It was used because it was easier to handle while on a horse. When trying to attack the Americans in close combat, it was easy for the British cavalry to shoot from their horses and kill more Americans.
The colonists also used a wide variety of weapons, despite not having as much money and power as the British. They used muskets, rifles, bayonets, tomahawks, and cannons.
Muskets, one of the oldest types of guns, rely on an age-old way of causing a gunshot: Flint and steel. There are 3 main parts to a musket, the hammer, the frizzen, and the pan. The gun works in a way that the hammer, using springs, accelerates and lets the flint and steel touch. The frizzen is the steel. With the force from the hammer sparks are made. After the hammer and frizzen touch the frizzen moves back and exposes the pan, allowing the sparks to go into it. The pan holds the gunpowder and ignites when contacted with sparks. The gunpowder then ignites and the bullet is shot. Muskets are smoothbores, meaning the inside of the barrel is smooth. This causes the bullets to not be as accurate of the opposite, a rifled barrel (which spin the bullet, making it more accurate. Another key feature was that a bayonet could be attached to this, and since this was used so often it was named the most important weapon of the time.
Rifles were the runner-up for most important weapon because of their long barrel lengths. In fact, these rifles were called long rifles for that reason. This extra long barrel allows shots to be more precise, but this rifles also has rifling inside. Rifling is a set a groves a bullet can follow to make it spin, causing it to be even more accurate. The way this works is to press the trigger, which causes a firing pin to hit the primer. The primer ignites the gunpowder and shot is shot! Although these weren't used as much as muskets, they deserved their high ranking.
Bayonets are a close-combat weapon that is, in concept, a knife stuck on a gun. That's how simple it is, but is surprisingly effective. A bayonet can be attached on almost any gun (with the right technique) and allows for both close and far combat to be covered. The bayonet allowed the weakness of guns, close combat, to be covered. The way the bayonet can be attached is by putting the bayonet lug into its place (near the end of the muzzle) and making sure it's stuck.
Tomahawks, which are just axes but also fit for throwing, are close-combat tools. They were mainly used for opening wooden items up, like crates or doors. Also, they were mostly used by the Native Americans.
Cannons are wagon-moved bombers that can wreek havoc. Once a fuse is lit and the bomb-shell is loaded, all the soldiers have to do is wait until it fires. Most cannons from this era are effective until 700 yards, meaning it's a long-range weapon. Cannons are mostly used for any destruction in general. If you're trying to take down an enemy fort, cannons are great. If you're trying to stop the enemy from pushing further onto your forces, cannons can break their offense. The common types of cannons used here are: 3 pound gallopers, 6 pound gun, and howitzers. Howitzers are special because they aim up, rather than straight ahead, to drop a bomb from above.
The advantage (weapon wise) goes to the British army because the colonists didn't really use pistols as much, as pistols are great for quick kills because they can be used on horses or other fast transportation and get shots in. Also, if we take numbers into account, there will be far more British soldiers than colonists, meaning there will more force against the colonists. If the British force has about double the pistol forces than the colonists, then the British will most likely win.
The disadvantage here goes to the colonists for their choice of tomahawks over pistols (some used pistols but not more than tomahawks). Tomahawks are versatile tools that can accomplish many tasks, such as breaking crates, crashing skulls, and being thrown. Although it has many uses it lacks the range attacks the pistol serves. If you throw the tomahawk once you have to go back to where you threw it and pick it up. You also can't have a stack of tomahawks ready to be thrown in a barrage unless you want to be weighed down a lot. Also, the bayonets kind of cover the tomahawks up because it provides close range combat (the reason the other guns don't cover the rifle is because they can't be shot on fast vehicles). Although it's not a blunt object it can still hurt if used the right way, making up for the tomahawk.
Overall, the British have an advantage in weapons over the colonists because they have pistols while the colonists have tomahawks. Both sides had muskets, bayonets, cannons, and rifles in their arsenal. Muskets use flint and steel sparks to cause a gunshot while rifles used a primer striking the gunpowder and igniting it. Bayonets are knife-like objects that are attached to the end of guns, primarily muskets. Cannons use balls of lead or other material that get shot with extreme force into enemy buildings to knock them down. Pistols work by the primer method too, and are able to be used on horses or fast vehicles. Tomahawks have three purposes: To break items, to stab people, and the crush bones. They can also be thrown.
