ECONOMIC LENS
It seems as though the economy was the center of government in a way and therefore had to be strong enough to hold the diversity of our country. The Constitution serves as an economic document just as much as it is a political document.
POLITICAL LENS
The political lens is supported by the multiple drafts and revisions that led to the creation of the Constitution. The reactions and responses regarding the Articles of Confederation set the need for revision around distribution of powers.
SOCIAL LENS
Understanding how the creators of the Constitution interacted with one another as well as compromised on ideas allows me to gain a better understanding of the social lens. The personalities and viewpoints of the Founding Fathers embody the entirety of the Constitution.
The Constitution was created in order to support a strong central government, an issue that become apparent due to the weak government supported in the Articles of Confederation. The revision process of the Constitution began with the Federalist Papers which provides an insight on the contributing personalities of the creators. Through these significant documents, compromises were of key importance in order to justify and create the basis of our country. The Constitution has guided our country through thick and thin, yet as our country quickly changes, it is important to find the value in the Constitution’s relevance today. Our country stands today because of the Constitution however, the creators may not have been prepared for the changes we have undergone while standards are constantly up for debate
As humans, we make mistakes, however, it is what we learn from those mistakes that benefit us. We take what we learn from situations in the past while using history and possible precedents to help us solve current issues. It is important to understand and analyze what led up to certain events in which have formed our country.
Through understanding the purpose behind each creator, we can gain insight on the reason for drafting, revising and creating the Constitution. From this, I am able to take the background knowledge of the creators and relate it to how it still applies to our country today, as well as what ideas were not foreshadowed. We rely on a chain of interpretation when analyzing history. Through the target lens of each historian, history’s value fluctuates.
History provides value to our daily lives by giving us context on how we ended up in the position we are today.
I do believe history has a tendency of repeating itself, however, history has also set many precedents in order to do just the opposite. Without history, we would not be where we are today. Each detail and event has shaped our country.
The Founding Fathers created the Constitution in order to avoid all of the controversy that surrounds it today. However, history repeats itself and that is something we the people have little control over as we do not take the time to educate ourselves on the history of our country.
While I don't agree that knowing history should necessarily be required, citizens have an obligation to know where we came from, how our world came to be and the minds that shaped our reality. With the knowledge of the past, citizens are able to analyze the problems faced more in depth as well as the measures taken to solve them. With this information, citizens can form scenarios for possible solutions and relate them to current issues. History allows us the opportunity to learn from our mistakes.
