The overarching motive to this project is collaboration,

Collaboration across cultures, Māori and Pākehā in order to co create, co habitat and co design an Aotearoa New Zealand for the benefit of all.

Te ao Māori world view promotes sustainability and regeneration at a fundamental level.

I have the opinion we in the modern world need to realign our relationship with the environment.

What better way to do that in the context of Aotearoa than being inspired by and learn from the knowledge and values of te ao Māori.

'Ko au ko te taiao, ko te taiao ko au - I am the environment and the environment is me.' We are all connected, people and planet.

Designing partnership with mana whenua aims to honour, Te Tiriti o Waitangi, and bring balance in the public domain.

UN Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples signed (2010)

Mana whenua Māori are no longer just participants, but in actuality leaders and partners and have an important role in the design public environments.

All cities have cultural history that is portrayed and celebrated in there own way,

Aiming to create a unique and functional public environment for all people to enjoy and appreciate.

Te Aranga Māori Design Principles were developed by Māori design professionals as a response to the New Zealand Urban Design Protocol in 2005.

This enables the development community to understand priorities to positively engage with mana whenua to shape our built environment.

Purpose of Frank Kitts Park is to be a connector to the central city and harbour, connect to the waterfront, moana, and city.

A vibrant centrepiece of community life for all

Frank Kitts Park has the potential to be a connector between, people, cultures and moana and the sea.

Reclaim land by a visual representation of fluidity in new design.

FRANK KITTS CULTURAL OVERLAY - KEY DESIGN DRIVERS

Tuhono – union, connection, relationships, bond.

Manaakitanga – hospitality, kindness, generosity, support - the process of showing respect, generosity and care for others.

Kaitiakitanga – guardianship, stewardship, trusteeship, trustee.

Mana – prestige, authority, control, power, influence, status, spiritual power, charisma.

KEY DESIGN PRINCIPLES

Ranginui – the connection to the various spiritual realms of the great and vast heavens, the source of light and understanding, growth and ultimate link to the celestial family.

Papatūānuku – The Mountains, the cliffs, the landforms, the geology, ngāhere, trees, birds–they all need each other to exist.

Mouri – the mouri of the areas of significance within Frank Kitts – the living relationship between the forests, the cliffs, the

waterways, the harbour and everything that lives within that environment have their own individual and interdependent vitality.

Wai Tai, Wai Māori – t he connection between the springs, streams, aquifers, rivers and all waterways that bring with them their life, mouri and mana which eventually mingles together with our harbour.

Āhua – the character of seen, the beauty, the mystique, the wonder, the wild and rawness – the identity of te Whanganui a tara endures

Tātai Whakapapa – the history, the connections, the relationships and friendships– the care of visitors and people is embedded in the identity of Frank Kitts seeking to ensure a strong sense of connection imbuing a strong sense of responsibility towards the area.

Mana Whenua – Frank kitts seen as a living piece of the identity of Mana Whenua who take pride in this space, taking on the obligation of care, responsibility and giving life to its history and story.

CONCEPT 1 - COLLABORATIVE PARAMETRIC BENCH

Tuhono – union, connection, relationship, bond.

Āhua – is seen, the beauty, the mystique, the wonder, the wild and rawness

CONCEPT 2 - DAYLIGHTING TRIBUTARIES

Wai Tai, Wai Māori –

The connection between the springs, streams, aquifers, rivers and all waterways that bring with them their life. To highlight this, the daylighting tributaries concept seeks to connect and celebrate these water sources.

Mouri –

the mouri of the living relationship between

the forests, the cliffs, the waterways, the harbour and everything

that lives within that environment have their own individual

and interdependent vitality.

To daylight these waterways would set the intention to regenerate the relationship between elements that occupy this space, in a holistic sense.

CONCEPT 3 - NATIVE COMMUNITY GREEN WALL

Kaitiakitanga – accessible parts of wall would be open to the public for the planting of harvestable, plants such as herbs, medincinal plants and harakeke

Whānau – act as a family and comunity connection point
