Beginning

Creator and the racket characteristics

- Major Walter C. Wingfield, London, England in 1874

- He patented the game and called it a Sphairistiké– Greek for "ball games."

- Wingfield’s patent expired in 1877, allowing the game to further evolve.

- Racket was large

- Heavy between 13 and 14 ounces or (370 g & 400 g), -

- Made of solid wood - Mahogany, Maple, Oak, Teak & Walnut.

- Could deal with some severe damage

- Strings made out of the outer skin of ship intestines

Game changer characteristics

- Advances in laminating technology resulted in the first tennis racket made of laminated wood in 1947.

- Laminated wood - layers of wood glued or otherwise united with the grains parallel to form boards or timbers

- Dramatically increased the performance an durability of rackets which was seen as a major advancement.
