Focus will be on principles of learning, using technology to differentiate instruction, and developing an engaging classroom environment. Practicum/field experience hours: 10. Fingerprint clearance required.
10 Hours Required
Interview a special education teacher, a general education teacher, an administrator, a teacher’s aide, and one special area teacher (PE, art, music, computers, library, etc.) and discuss differentiated instruction Consider the following:
Write a 250-350 word summary of your interviews. These interviews will inform your Benchmark assignment in Topic 5.
Review the lesson plan you revised in Topic 3 with at least two teachers at your school. Ask them to evaluate the lessons for evidence of differentiated instruction. Take note on where the teachers feel you could more explicitly differentiate.
Spend the remainder of your field experience hours observing at least two teachers in your school, looking for evidence of differentiated instruction.
Write a 250-350 word summary of the feedback the teachers gave you and what you witnessed in their classrooms. You will use this information in your Benchmark assignment.
Deliver the professional development presentation on differentiated curriculum that you created for the Benchmark this week to a small group of teachers. Elicit their feedback on the presentation.
Write a 150-250 word summary of the feedback the teachers gave you on your professional development presentation.
You will define funds of knowledge and the influence that funds of knowledge have on teaching and learning and determine the effect of diverse cultural values and community backgrounds on learning.
Define funds of knowledge. What influence does a student’s funds of knowledge have on his or her learning? Explain.
How do diverse cultural values represented in a single classroom influence learning? Discuss 2-3 ways that teachers can recognize and show that they appreciate students’ cultural values.
Create a 12-15 slide digital presentation on Funds of Knowledge for an audience of your peers. You must include a title and reference slide as well as 3-5 peer-reviewed scholarly sources. Your professional development presentation needs to include the following:
Prepare this assignment according to the APA guidelines found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center. An abstract is/is not required.
This assignment uses a rubric. Review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion.
This week you will examine the influences of each student’s cognitive, linguistic, social, emotional, and physical development on learning, explain cognitive processes associated with various kinds of learning and stimulation techniques, and design instruction based on an understanding of learning theory, human development, cultural diversity, and individual differences.
Chapters 2 & 3
Discuss two cognitive processes associated with learning that you have witnessed in students. As an educator, what can you do to positively influence the cognitive process?
Discuss the influence of development on learning? How does social and emotional development influence learning? How does physical development influence learning?
Use the “COE Lesson Plan Template” to complete this assignment. Create a lesson plan that promotes cultural diversity in the grade level, content area, and on a topic of your choice. Your lesson plan must clearly reflect an understanding of the learning theory and must be at the appropriate developmental level for students in the grade level you have chosen.
Write a 250-300 word rationale for the instructional decisions you made in the lesson plan, explaining which learning theory your lesson plan supports. Be sure to justify your decisions with the developmental levels of the students in mind.
While APA format is not required for this assignment, solid academic writing is expected. In-text citations and a reference page should be presented using APA documentation guidelines, which can be found in the Student Success Center. An abstract is not required.
Objectives
This week you will identify readiness for learning according to developmental and performance levels, evaluate individual students’ strengths, interest, and needs for growth to inform appropriate instruction., determine appropriate instructional strategies to create learning opportunities that account for individual differences and learning preferences, and design technology enriched learning experiences and environments that promote student learning and educational ownership.
List at least two ways you can identify student’s readiness for learning according to their developmental and performance levels. Describe why it is important to understand if students are ready to learn or not.
Compare two ways in which you can evaluate individual students’ interests to inform instruction. Which are you most likely to use in your classroom? Explain.
Spend 5 hours completing this field experience (Template in Forum).
Revise your lesson plan from Topic 2 to include technology and differentiation for readiness, interest, instruction, and learning preferences. Refer to your textbook for information on creating a GRASPS Frame. Create a GRASPS Frame handout to use as a performance assessment for the lesson plan you revised in this topic.
Write a 250-350 word rationale evaluating how your lesson plan and GRASPS handout differentiates for readiness, interest, instruction, and learning preferences using technology.
Submit your revised lesson plan, the GRASPS handout, and the rationale as one deliverable to your instructor in LoudCloud.
As a means of creating more authentic “performances of understanding,” we recommend that teachers frame assessment tasks with the features suggested by the acronym GRASPS.
(1) a real-world GOAL
(2) a meaningful ROLE for the student
(3) authentic (or simulated) real-world AUDIENCE(s)
(4) a contextualized SITUATION that involve real-world application
(5) student-generated culminating products and PERFORMANCES
(6) consensus-driven performance STANDARDS (criteria) for judging success.
Suggestions:
This week you will create relevant learning experiences that are appropriate for curriculum goals and content standards, develop appropriate sequencing of learning experiences to facilitate learning, evaluate different strategies to present material that engages diverse students, supports creativity and inventiveness, and promotes the use of collaborative and digital tools, and assess resources and curriculum materials for appropriateness for individuals and groups of students.
How does Understanding by Design help teachers develop appropriate sequencing of a lesson to facilitate learning?
Looking back on what you have learned about differentiated instruction and Understanding by Design, discuss how essential questions can help to create relevant learning experiences that are appropriate for curriculum goals and content standards.
Spend 4 hours completing this field experience.
Review the lesson plan you revised in Topic 3 with at least two teachers at your school. Ask them to evaluate the lessons for evidence of differentiated instruction. Take note on where the teachers feel you could more explicitly differentiate.
Write a 250-350 word summary of the feedback the teachers gave you and what you witnessed in their classrooms. You will use this information in your Benchmark assignment.
Design an Understanding by Design lesson plan using the grade level and an appropriate content area at your field experience site. Your lesson plan must include differentiated instruction for diverse populations represented in your school. Student use of technology to aid in learning must also be taken into consideration.
This week you will create developmentally appropriate instruction that takes into account individual students’ strengths, interests, and needs and that enable each student to advance and accelerate his or her learning, design instruction and assessments to address each student’s diverse learning strengths and needs, and create opportunities for students to demonstrate their learning in different ways, manage the learning environment to actively and equitably engage students by organizing, allocating, and coordinating the resources of time, space, and students’ attention, and develop culturally diverse and differentiated curriculum.
