Tumblr and Twitter are both social networking websites founded in 2006. In this presentation, we will compare both websites to determine their relative effectiveness. This comparaison is based on different attributes of design and content of both websites.
Design refers to the aesthetic appeal and organization of the website.
Tumblr:
The dark blue background with white text shows contrast.
User posts within white text boxes emphasize the user’s feed.
Twitter:
The white background creates contrast but doesn’t allow for emphasis on user interaction
The bright blue “Tweet!” button grabs the user's attention
Both sites make it easy to access any information needed.
Neither site features anything to distract readers.
Both websites are user-friendly and feature informative headers.
Both sites offer search bars and menus for navigation.
Tumblr utilizes a header menu with icons, while Twitter uses a sidebar with text accompanying icons.
At the top of users’ feeds, Tumblr and Twitter have textual buttons to switch the content on the user’s feed below.
Each post in the feed is put in proximity to the profile picture and username of the poster. Twitter provides numerical indicators for each interaction (likes/comments/reposts) separately, while Tumblr incorporates all interactions under the umbrella term “notes.”
Tumblr and Twitter align posts/blogs/tweets vertically. Users can easily understand the information and it reads clearly.
Twitter:
All text is in the same font with varying colors. User posts look uniform and cohesive in the feed.
Tumblr:
All text is in the same font with little emoticons amongst the letters. User posts are more flexible, causing a less cohesive feel to the feed.
Content focuses on the information itself within the website.
Tumblr is far more flexible than Twitter when it comes to creating posts. Users are able to share more on Tumblr, due to Twitter's character limit.
Explore pages are available on both websites. Twitter’s page focuses more on current events, while Tumblr’s page features anything and everything.
When searching for the same image, both websites pulled up the painting easily. Tumblr featured off-topic posts as well, while Twitter stayed focused on the search.
Although Twitter and Tumblr serve similar purposes and have many similarities, the websites also differ in many ways. As most media is, social networking websites are subjective and made to serve a general public. Not everyone will like them and everyone will have different opinions. As long as they entertain, they are serving their designed purpose.
