James-Lange Theory vs. Schachter-Singer Two Factor Theory

By: Jasmin Gonzalez

James-Lange Theory

  • This theory was first brought up by a physiologist named William James. Then was later developed by physiologist Carl Lange.
  • Was established in 1884
  • With this theory it is believed that physiological arousal is what sets of your emotions
  • For example if you were to encounter lets say a snake that instance would trigger your heart rate to increase. This increase is was initially made us realized we were in fear.

Theories of emotion

Schachter-Singer Two Factor Theory.

Second theory

  • It was established by Stanley Schachter and Jerome E. Singer.
  • This theory was created in 1962
  • It is believed that this theory states emotions are based on physiological arousal and cognitive label.
  • An example would be if you were to see a snake you could feel one of 2 things either fear or joy. It depends on what your sympathetic nervous system activates.
