“Plant the books, turn in an alarm, and see the fireman’s houses burn…”(Bradbury 83)

Montags plan

“You see? I knew it, that's what I wanted to prove! I knew it would happen! I’ve always said, poetry and tears, poetry and suicide and crying and awful feelings, poetry and sickness; all that mush!”(Bradbury 97)

Theme pharagraph

When censorship is abused, humanity will lose their link to their past blocking their progression into the future. First, when Montag was forcing Mildred to read, “Mildred kicked the book. “Books aren’t people, you read I look all around, but there isn’t anybody!”(Bradbury 69). Mildred can’t comprehend nor imagine what happens in the book. She shows that humanity doesn’t have an imagination and can’t visualize situations in their head from books. Secondly, after Montag read the poem to Mildred's friends, Mrs.Bowles reponded, “You see? I knew it, that's what I wanted to prove! I knew it will happen! I’ve always said, poetry and tears, poetry and suicide and crying and awful feelings, poetry and sickness; all that mush!”(Bradbury 97). Mr.Phelps and Bowles can’t process the emotion they feel from the poem that Montag read to them. Their confused and extreme reactions to the emotions they felt shows that humanity now can’t process complex emotions from literature anymore.
