Ladder & Scaffold Safety

Stepladders

Ladder and Scaffold Safety

A step ladder has flat steps and two sides that are connected by a hinge and secured by a locking bracket.

Safe and correct use of a stepladder

- Never use the top two steps of a step ladder as steps

- Do not straddle the top of a stepladder

- Do not use the bracing on the rear section of the stepladder for climbing

- Make sure the ladder is locked in the open position

- Never place a stepladder on an inclined surface

Ladder and Scaffold Safety

Extension Ladders

Unlike a stepladder, the extension ladder doesn't support itself. It is typically leaned against a structure.

- For every 4' of height, the ladder base should be placed 1' out from structure

- The feet of the ladder should be secured before the ladder is used

- The ladder should be secured to the structure at the top

- When using the extension ladder to access work area, the ladder should extend 3 feet above the step off point

- Always check around for overhead powerlines where the ladder is to be used

Ladder and Scaffold Safety

Scaffolding

Temporary elevated platforms with supporting structures. they are designed to hold the carpenter and a minimal amount of materials so that the work can be done safely and conveniently.

Power Tools

Handling Tools Properly

Keep hands and other body parts away from blades and sharp edges, unplug saws to change blades

Improperly used tools can destroy expensive material, damage components, and cause injuries

Lack of familiarity and skill with tools is one of the major causes of work- related injuries

Proper care of power cords:

  • keep cords out of walkways
  • Keep power cords away from blades and sharp edges
  • Use GFCI

Before a tool is used it should be inspected, damaged tools should be taken out of service immidiately, and at the end of the day tools should be stored properly
