Antinomies of Definition
DEFINITIONS
The meaning/signification of terms (and concepts, trends) is unstable and this can be demonstrated by the forcing antinomies or paradoxes in taking a term's meaning to be too explicit or restrictive
By nature of context, terms include that which they seem to exclude, "trends" indicate something may happen - or not happen.
"A poem, by shifting the imagery of its metaphors, permit us to contemplate the subject from the viewpoitn of varios objects" (33)

Purpose

Purpose can be either pragmatic or mystical, both categories narrow the "motivational circumference" (297) - pragmatism by avoiding reference to purpose and mysticism by elevating purpose to a transcendent level
